When starting a new website, eventually you will need to find the right web host to publish your website out to the internet. But did you know, there are over a dozen different types of web hosting? Did you also know that picking the wrong service could mean the end of your website (or atleast some downtime).

We can start by breaking down website hosting into two classes:

  1. Linux Web Hosting
  2. Windows Website Hosting

There are many differences between the two – you will need to read a whole article to understand the differences. The main difference is what each can run. Linux is mostly PHP based, and Windows is mostly ASP based. For a more detailed explanation between Linux and Windows web hosting, check out this article.Once you figure out if you need Linux or Windows, we can now break each web hosting class down into more types:

  1. Dedicated server
  2. Virtual Private Server
  3. Reseller hosting
  4. Shared web hosting

So which one of these types is the best for your website? This is difficult to answer through an article because there are many different websites with many different requirements. I will try my best to make it clear to you

Dedicated Servers: Perfect for high traffic or high volume websites. You will want this if your site outgrows a VPS plan

Virtal Private Server(VPS): A VPS plan is basically a fraction of a server – they guarantee you a fraction of the servers CPU and RAM resource, as well as disk space and bandwidth. These are great for your medium sized site or any site that requires in depth admin access.

Reseller Hosting: Reseller hosting allows you to resell shared web hosting plans. Pick reseller hosting if you plan to make money by selling your own web hosting services.

Shared Web Hosting: Most startup sites and small-medium sized websites will be fine on a shared web hosting plan. Just beware of using too much CPU or RAM resources. This may end up getting your website suspended.

I have covered most of the main types of website hosting so far, but there still are others. The ones I have listed are what I consider to be the most common types of hosting and what most people will end up using. Good luck on your web hosting selection and getting your website popular!
