OpenOffice is at version 3.x right now.
I am using Ubuntu 9.10 and OpenOffice 3. The next version of Ubuntu will come out around April 2010. Will most likely include the newest version of OpenOffice in the live cd.
If not, then users of Ubuntu can always download OpenOffice 3.x easily, as the article says.

Andy, your right. I'm really not happy about this news. I love Open Office and have been promoting it heavily for some time now. This will hurt them badly or force them to make some major changes to stay relevant.

I have some bad news for you, Ubuntu just dropped OpenOffice from it's free operating system in favour of Google docs.

This is not a good sign for the linux comunity.
