Accelerators are a new addition to Internet Explorer. These tools save you browsing time by turning common searches into a simple right-click function. For example, highlight an address, right click on it, and choose a mapping feature to view a small map of the location and a link to get to directions. This saves time you would have spent opening a new window, looking up a map website, and copy/pasting the address on a mapping website, performing the search, then clicking the directions option.

You can see search results on multiple engines like Google, Dictionary.com, and Wikipedia. Simply highlight any length of text on the web site, like “Empire State Building” for example, and right click. Accelerators will either show entries directly from the menu, or open the page of your choice in a new tab. You can jump to “Empire State Building” search results on Google, the dictionary or Wikipedia entry, or even look for books or related products on Amazon or eBay instead of pulling up the sites individually and performing the search. There are dozens of accelerators, including shortcuts to Urban Dictionary, YouTube, and Facebook.

Another new IE8 feature is the Web Slice. It’s a miniature window that is available for participating websites (indicated by the green web slice icon at the top of the page) that can be added to your favorites toolbar. For example, you bid on an eBay item, then add a slice for that particular item, which appears in your favorites toolbar. When the slice has new information (and you can edit how often it checks), the slice title become bold so you know when someone bid on your item no matter what site you are on at the time. There are also web slices for news, stocks, weather, sports, and email sites.

IE8 has some features that have already been introduced on other browsers. Like Chrome, IE8′s “tab isolation” prevents the whole window from crashing if one tab malfunctioning, and the “In-private browsing” that allows users to surf undetected by their computer. Like Firefox, users can restore the previous session if the browser window is interrupted. Like most browsers, you can now restore recent tabs if you accidentally close them.

If I said to you five years ago that Google would be entering the cell phone market, you would have said I was crazy. Look at the market now and you will see Google Android phones being sold by multiple carriers. This is only one example of Google’s attempt at controlling your computing experience. In the near future, Google will be attempting to control your searches, run your cell phones and computers, as well as be your long distance phone carrier. All of this will be under the guise of cloud computing.

Where did Google get this idea of controlling the whole mold of cloud computing? Most of their roots are placed in Unix. Back in the 70′s, computers with any real processing power were just too expensive for individuals to have. To get around this problem, corporations created dummy terminals that were just basically display screens. Everything you typed or wanted processed was sent to a server. The server completed the process and then sent the result back to you via the display screen. This was later revamped into X11 which used a full fledged graphical user interface.

Sun Microsystems later served as an inspiration with their java and jini technologies, eliminating the need for a specific operating system. This gave way to the notion that anyone using any operating system on any gadget could have a thin client that will be able to use the main server. This has been later used globally with web 2.0.

From conception to implementation, Google is taking their idea by using step by step encapsulation of the whole computing experience. Their first move was to create the great search engine that we all use today. Then Google created an email and document/office online collaboration suite. They are taking prior Unix/Linux ideas and technologies and creating their own operating systems. For desktop PC’s and laptops, there is Chrome OS. This use of their custom browser within their custom operating system to enter and edit data online via Google applications creates the full circle of desktop computing. You now have access to millions of people through the use of Google’s thin clients. Google has also been recently trying to transform your email and social networking with a new product that is not yet ready for widespread release called Google Wave. With Google Wave, your email and social medias will be put on their servers through an internet connection.

It does not end there though. With recent experience in operating systems, Google has been moving into the cell phone operating system market for smart phones. This is a growing market along with a two year turn over market for hardware. As far as an advertising market, this has been untapped and Google is looking to capitalize on this new outlet. This may explain their recent purchase of AdMob, a company that specializes in creating advertisements and marketing to cell phones.

Google’s interest does not only lie with cell phone advertisements. For weeks, they have been using Google Voice through beta testing. This technology was acquired through the purchase of Grand Central and with it, you can record voicemails and phone conversations on their servers. You tie that in with the recent purchase of the VOIP company, Gizmo5, and you now have an all encompassing and multi-purpose phone company.

The last area they are heading towards is our living room. To do this, they will be taking on the cable company. With YouTube under their belt, they are only a couple years away from making IPTV a reality. In addition, with having more experience with operating systems, how long would it take them to have a set top box in your home?

So the question to ask yourself is this: Will all of these technologies just simplify my life or is there a cost of privacy to this serenity? Do I think Google is evil? No, but always beware that with this ease of use a big brother IS watching you. So what can we expect from Google five years from now? World domination.

The Chrome browser has made a splash into the browser market. It was only a matter of time before a larger search engine company like Google came out with their own browser software. There is a recent update to make them one of the first browsers that guards against clickjacking.

What is clickjacking?

Let’s say you to a web site and see a menu and other links on the page. It looks like any other web site without any warning flags or issues. You go to click on a menu item of interest but are suddenly taken to a page that you never wanted to actually go to.

What happens is that there is a transparent page above the page that you can actually see. Many times you end up clicking on one of two things. Google has always been a gentle giant – unlike the bravado Microsoft. No rantings and ravings – no pronouncement that “our way is best,” or “we know what is good for you.” No, Google’s way is to welcome open standards and actively promote their competition. For example, their tool to move a blog off their (free) Blogger service is fully as complete and usable as their their tool to transfer a blog onto Blogger. Try getting your data out of a Microsoft product such as Outlook or Hotmail.

Perhaps Google has learned from Microsoft’s mistakes. Gentle wins in the long run. This is really good for Google, but is it good for the rest of us. Because Google take such great pains to offend no one, because it is so capable, and because it now has tremendous momentum, Google is taking over more of the world of technology every day.

Google completely dominates my own professional life as an author and blogger to an extent that is more than a little concerning. Google search and Gmail are the least of it. My blogs are on Blogger, but I could use another service. It’s not even Picasa, or YouTube, or FeedBurner.

AdSense/AdWords – that’s the stranglehold. Google is essentially the only channel for a small business to either advertise of receive advertising revenue on a website or blog. Yahoo and others aren’t even on the radar. If I had to, I could use Yahoo’s search engine, but if I lost AdSense/AdWords, 80% of my professional activity would vaporize.

In its own gentle giant kind of way, Google is now creeping up on computing and enterprise information sharing. Shared calendars and shared documents for starters – moving quickly toward a complete collaborative computing environment. Just watch – for most users, personal and corporate, the only local software will be a browser, perhaps Google’s Chrome. Google’s individual and collaborative on-line productivity and authoring applications will dominate for all but the most demanding users.

Should we be worried? Perhaps not, but don’t become too complacent.

Google and Microsoft were some of the friendliest companies ever existant. Microsoft loved Google, Google loved Microsoft. It should have stayed like that forever. But it isn’t going to. Pretty soon, it is going to become extremely ugly between Microsoft and Google. It is going to be the ultimate cage match.

Why wouldn’t it? Google is competing with the software giant Microsoft with it’s new Chrome OS And due to many factors, Microsoft has to fear Google’s new OS. It is supposed to be the most revolutionary OS the world has ever seen, but for free.

Over the years, Microsoft has built up a name for itself in the business world. It has a fairly affordable OS, and Windows can run on virtually every computer created. Yet, individuals hate Windows due to the lack of stability and the lack of features. From Windows 95 to Windows XP, not many people have loved Windows.

Microsoft’s Windows Vista had a chance of breaking the line as the best version of Windows, but just like before, Microsoft let the general population down. But what could the general population couldn’t do crud about it. All us poor people had no choice between an expensive mac or a cheap pc.

Apple’s Mac OS X is also popular, but no where near as affordable. After Microsoft let people down again, they could have built an affordable macbook, but it didn’t take the opportunity to kick Microsoft out of it’s niche. It had a perfect opportunity to lower the price on it’s popular macbook to something people could afford, but it still didn’t. So now it has pretty much lost it’s big chance.

After all this, people have a new option. Turn to the other other guy. But, for a long time, there hasn’t been the other guy. So, what has happened? A new guy claimed the call. But not just any new guy. The PPC giant Google claimed it.

For years, people have flocked to Google, giving it a ranking of number one on Alexa.com. From searching, to Google Earth, to Blogger, to PPC ads, Google has had almost every single internet user on it’s site at least once.

Contrary to Microsoft, Google is actually someone people like and trust. Google has given the people what they need. Their products are actually good products, not just made for profits like Microsoft’s inventory. So unlike Microsoft, Google has a good reputation.

And because of that, when Google announced that they were releasing an OS for netbooks, everyone listened and eagerly waited for the big day, the day that they could actually get boot time in seconds, not minutes, the day everyone could use their computer’s full functionality without wasting resources.

But will Google deliver to it’s great number of followers? We will have to wait to find out.

The disturbing announcement, for Microsoft, came in the form of a blog post on Google’s website on the 7th of July, whereby a plan to launch their new operating system named Chrome OS later this year had been revealed. This could be seen as a direct attack on Microsoft, with several key factors playing a role in the reason as to why this will soon become a fierce battle between the giant corps.

Microsoft’s PC operating system has a total market share in the area of 90%, which brings in roughly half of its annual income at $11 billion annually. If Chrome OS is to disrupt this money flow, Microsoft will be looking to take serious action to make up the difference in other areas of the computing world, which in fact, is already the case.

Bing, a new search engine from Microsoft has been launched, which is now partnered with yahoo search in order to compete with Google. In this particular field, Google are the current champs with 65% of US market shares, with Microsoft climbing the ranks with 8.5% added together with yahoo’s market share could take them up to a total of roughly 30%. This could majorly disrupt Google’s main money making program, with $10 billion yearly revenue from search advertising at stake.

The list of competing products does not end here however, with YouTube vs. Msn being another. YouTube had been bought out by Google in 2006 for a sum of £1.65 billion, which is now offering branded channels and such to turn it into a profitable business. Msn also offers advertising, whereby Microsoft is taking a keen interest in TV commercials in the form of web video, as Google have a huge edge in this field.

Next on the list, is the e-mail. Microsoft’s Hotmail have more than 300 million monthly users according to comScore. Advertisement revenue from this kind of traffic can be substantial, and so Google have now officially launched Gmail which has roughly 150 million users monthly, according to comScore. Google’s E-mail platform will have many added features in the near future which could get the attention of many more e-mailers, particularly from the younger generation.

And still, it goes on. Facebook vs MySpace. Microsoft has purchased a small share of Facebook, with 250 million monthly active users, for a sum of $240 million, plus $150 million for advertising rights. Meanwhile, Google have made an agreement with Myspace in a search and advertising deal worth $900 million over a three year span. Myspace have 130 million active users on a monthly bases.

So it seems that Microsoft are still winning the fight as it stands at the moment, but Google still have some tricks. Chrome web browser, Google Docs and mobile phone operating systems. Also, Google have spent an outrageous amount of $$$ in acquiring a number of small companies, which will all be playing a role in the upcoming battle.

Google is shaping up to literally go to war with Microsoft for the dominance of the computer operating system market. Starting with the introduction of their new web browser Chrome they began to work toward the goal of stripping Microsoft from the world’s computers. Recently the announced that they would be constructing an operating system of their own and surprisingly enough they plan on calling it Chrome OS.

If you look at the chrome browser logo you can plainly see the resemblance to the Microsoft logo in color scheme and texture. This is their approach to tricking people into making Google look more like something they are already familiar with. Recently Google announced their own programming language that is ready to begin being experimented with.

I believe they are trying to have programmers begin creating programs using the language they claim is faster and more stable than the commonly used C++ programming language used primarily for Windows programs. Why? Simply put so that when they launch their own operating system they will already have a large number of programs ready for users to begin, well using. It may sound like absurd talk, but it really would be a great marketing strategy.

At Google’s current rate of new features and announces I would expect that they sound have the beta of Chrome OS out before the end of 2010 which means that Microsoft could have some serious fire coming their way shortly.

The implications are huge, Google has yet to create anything that completely and utterly bombed out which means that should their efforts succeeded and they get the market share Microsoft has on desktops and Linux has on servers they would literally know more about the average internet user (or person) than any other agency in the world has ever known. I don’t know about you or anyone else, but that literally scares me to death.

It’s going to be very interesting to keep up with what all is about to happen in the years to come as things change and companies get bigger and better with their new features and bling blings.
