Google TV? not really, far fetched far from it!

When Google hold their annual I/O developer conference the question was what else could the search mongol come up with to dominate the tech space? Google TV was the answer that came out of Google I/O this morning. Using search to determined what TV show, movie or channel you want to watch Google has integrated the worlds largest search engine into our living room. TV meet web. Web meets TV as it states on Google’s Blog today.

At the consumer electronics show CES in Las Vegas this year the big hits were 3D and interconnected TVs and it was clear that the industry is looking to bring internet connectivity to our TVs. Google TV offers exactly this connectivity and combines the best of the web on while you are watching your favorite show. Browse Facebook, watch your favorite photo slideshow, the funniest YouTube videos or the latest episode of Glee on your 40″ TV. Or better even have it all open at once if you prefer.

Google TV launches in fall 2010 and will be available in selected stores across the US. It will take shape in from of Google enabled DVR and blue-ray players, setop boxes and full size TVs and although we haven’t heard anything about the price point as yet, its fair to assume that it will be heavily subsidized by Google’s famous ads. Which could be good news if you are on a budget. The service will run on Google’s new Chrome OS, which we expect to see sometime next year rolling out on PCs.

It makes you wonder whether there is a consumer electronics market that could be safe from the search giant? Google’s launch of the Android mobile phone OS and this year’s move into the handset market with its very own Nexus One phone are evidence of aggressive this territory. It also explains why Apple and Google made the right choice in separating their executive boards last year.

Rumors about a Google music store are also floating around Twitter today, which makes sense considering their competing with the iPhone on all other markets such as browser, calendar, cloud, apps and mobile handsets. Why not rival iTunes with a Google TV a music store as well?

Google is on the market share hunt and so far no market is safe. The hand-held tech gadget market is already being challenged from the search giant and now that they are entering our living rooms, the sky seems to be the limit. In light of this you can probably understand or forgive the pullout of China earlier this year as a strategic move to really focus on the more profitable growth markets of the western world first. Does leave a bad taste for investors nevertheless and brings risk. Ablibaba China’s Ecommerce giant and second largest IPO after Google is already showing Google like growth trends and that’s just in their native language.

A redirect virus will redirect your web browser to a different website, Instead of where you wanted it to go.

Many times this is to send you to a website with advertising in order to get you to purchase something. Other time it may be to send you to a fake internet banking site to try to get your account information.

The redirect malware or virus will usually modify a file on your computer that is called the “hosts” file

Before we discuss what the hosts file is. I want to explain something about how you get to a website with your web browser.

There are a few popular web browsers today some are Internet Explorer also referred to as IE there is FireFox, Google Chrome, and also Safari. There are more available but these seems to be the ones that I see people using the most.

First of all a website has a numeric address, similar to a phone number or a street address.

So for instance Google has an address of 208.69.32.231 (referred to as IP address) you could type that into the address bar of your web browser and it would take you to Google. The problem is that trying to remember numbers is much more difficult for humans, so we use names.

When you request a website by name the first time your computer looks at the hosts file to see if it is listed there, usually there are no entries in the hosts file. If there is a entry for google.com with ANY IP address your computer will send you to THAT IP address even if it is not an address that belongs to Google.

When there is no entry for Google or the website you want to go to the computer will contact a domain name server (DNS) to see what the numeric address is of the website.

It learns that Google = 208.69.32.231 and the computer then displays the website you were looking for that resides at the particular address.

The redirect virus creates an entry for the Google site or any website and adds a fake IP address or an IP address that belongs to a different website. When you want to go to that particular site your computer will go to the fake/incorrect IP address that is in the hosts file.

So to fix this you first need to scan the computer and also fix the hosts file.

The hosts file can also be used to help protect you from bad websites. If you had a list of all the bad websites in the world, you could enter them into the hosts file and use the IP address of 127.0.0.1

The entry would look like this

badwebsitename 127.0.0.1

Then if you or someone using your computer tried to go to one of the bad websites listed in your computers hosts file, the web browser would display a error page that basically says the page cannot be displayed.

So you may wonder what is 127.0.0.1 or where is 127.0.0.1 Simple answer, it is your own computer.

Its called a loop back address.

So since there is not a website running on your computers loop-back address you get the page cannot be displayed error message, and that is much better then going to a website that has viruses or malware on it.

There are websites that maintain a hosts file with a list of well known bad Websites. If you replace your hosts file with it, you can keep your system safer from malware.

There are other types of viruses that can cause a redirect, some can actually change the setting in your router and it will send you to a bad DNS server.

Then the “poisoned” DNS server will redirect you. So you may think the problem lies within the computer but it may also be that your router was affected by a virus.

So far, this browser has been doing well in providing such safety during surfing. Another unique feature is a functionality that preserves processes with tabs that are not necessarily running into trouble. With other browsers, just one problematic tab can cause all open tabs to crash when the problem gets out of hand. With Chrome, only the affected tab closes which means all the others continue to work. In other words, Chrome runs each process or transaction independently of the others. Whatever causes problems with one tab will not affect the others and the browser itself cannot change anything in the user’s operating system in any way. This is, of course, another useful Internet security feature provided by the new program.

For those who don’t want to leave traces of their browsing on their computer, Chrome also has a feature that allows this. There could be many things that can make a legitimate user want to remain anonymous as far as the sites he visits are concerned. But for whatever reason, this new browser does have a feature that allows surfers to keep their surfing activity to themselves without leaving other users a clue. This means no history data will be stored, hence, the surfer can enjoy anonymity.

Google Chrome is currently in Beta testing and some flaws have also been spotted such as buffer overflow and its vulnerability to carpet-bombing, both of which could be exploited by black hats to advance their malicious activities. In the end, what’s important is that a new browser has been created with features that protect the user from the Internet itself. The flaws could easily be corrected but the good points about the browser could also remain for everyone to take advantage of.

For added online security, one may also install an IP hiding software which allows him to surf with his IP address hidden. With this program, a user may actually bump into a hacker, yet the user will be unidentified since his IP is unexposed. And because he’s unidentified, he can’t possibly be a hacking target. This portable tablet computer seems to have set the standards for this new market, its popularity with consumers has inspired many of the big electronics companies like Samsung, Nokia, Toshiba and NIVIDA to release their own versions. 2010 is set to be known to gadget geeks as the year of the portable touch screen tablets and could also mark a turning point in how we all view what a computer should look like and how it can be used.

Apples iPad operating system runs on basically the same platform as the earlier iphone device, it is fast, easy to navigate through and has proven itself to be reliable. The main rival to this OS is the ‘Android system’, developed by Google a few years back and licensed as open source software. You might be surprised to know that it is currently being used by a number of large mobile companies to power their portable touch screen handsets; in fact chances are you have the OS on your own phone. If you’ve been keeping up to date with the latest tablet computer news, then you’ll be aware of the WePad, a similar device to the iPad, but developed by the German telecommunications company Neophonie. The WePad has been nicknamed the ‘iPad killer’ as it is believed to be Apples main competition in the fight for top dog. This particular device has a few extra features that the iPad doesn’t, the inclusion of 2 USB ports for external linking and a webcam, which is something many Apple fans were expecting on the iPad.

So what is the difference between Apple iphone OS and the WePads android system? Is one better than the other? Comparing the two is like looking at the difference between apple computers and the Microsoft OS; both of them have a number of advantages and several downsides as well.

iPad – iphone OS

Apple has been at this game for a long time and has purposely controlled the development of its software and hardware. If an application developer was interested in creating a program for the new iPad, firstly they must pay $99 for a software package and tools; learn a new programming language called ‘Objective-C’; finally they would need to wait with fingers crossed hoping that their creation would be approved. The upside to this system is that the few chosen Mac application designers would know the OS like the back of their hands and could churn out programs that work incredibly well on the iPad.

iPad buyers will be happy to know that all of the applications that worked on the iphone can also be used on their new iPad, so users will have a huge selection of programs to choose from, plus many more to come.

WePad – Android OS

The Java based Android operating system on the other hand is freely available for download, any developer or large company can modify it to suit their particular product and study it to develop new applications. This OS is already being used by Samsung, Toshiba and of course by Neophonie in their WePad. The multi stacked Android OS has fewer applications available compared with the iPad, but these are early days; the plus side is the fact that it is open source so in the near future there will probably be more program than you can handle, as is already the case with the apple Mac PC. Many of the Google android software programs will also be free, offered by freelance developers who aren’t looking to make a fast buck, instead wanting to learn and experiment with this new portable platform. The last upside to the android OS is also compatible with flash player which allows it to view and interact with a lot more dynamic online content something that the iPad cannot do just yet.

In the beginning the Windows Mobile OS and the Palm OS ruled the Earth. One day, the Apple iPhone OS began to dominate the market. Today, a new competitor has climbed into the ring, Google Android. Google is slowly taking over the world, they took over our search engines, and we loved it. They took over our YouTube and we loved it. Now they’re taking over our cell phones, and I’ll love it, but not today.

Currently the only official Android compatible phone is the T-Mobile G1, which has already shown that the Android operating system has a lot of potential because it’s open source. I’ve been seeing a lot of programs for the Android platform but the iPhone has vastly more interesting programs. I see programs hit the iPhone first and then a similar program arrives for Android. It’s a great idea to let people develop programs on their own, not to mention it creates a very inexpensive market where you can get most of your programs for free. I have downloaded numerous programs but there’s so much more customization that can be had, we just haven’t seen it yet. One thing I am personally waiting for, is a today theme, just like on the Blackberry and Windows Mobile where your home screen shows your daily tasks, messages, and emails.

I’d also like to see an onscreen keyboard that trumps the iPhone. There are a few on the market right now but they’re not that great and you can only use them when you’re text messaging, they don’t work in your calendar or your emails. This is something Android developers must be working feverishly on because the proposed T-Mobile G2 doesn’t have a physical keyboard, but will that port over nicely to the G1? Only time will tell. I’ll love the Android OS one day, but not yet.

I do love how there’s not one, not two, but three desktops, who needs that much space? I need all that space! It allows me to place my icons and application shortcuts in a quick accessible location with just a swipe of the finger, no more digging through Program Menus. One thing I would like to see is a seamless slide from one screen to another. Right now the Android OS has the screens locking on one desktop then another and another.

Another thing that bothers me about the Android system is not being able to install programs onto the SD card, programs have to be installed on the phone and as you know the G1 doesn’t have infinite memory. It would be nice to install and run programs from the SD card, just like Windows Mobile. Of course the iPhone doesn’t have this problem because has plenty of onboard memory and no expansion slots.

The Android operating system is great, possibly better than Windows Mobile and the iPhone OS, but it has a lot more potential to become even better and completely take over our cell phones. I only have simple grievances about Android, it’s not anything big, but with such a powerful and dynamic operating system, I am disappointed it’s not mind blowing. I expect more, I expect a lot more, and I think Android will offer everything and anything you can imagine in the future revisions, but not yet today.

6. Google chrome has a privacy mode. Pages viewed here will never be logged on to your computer, that means no cookies etc.

7. Pop ups will be pushed to its own tab. To make the pop up visible simply drag it out and it will be promoted to its own window.

8. Sandboxing – The weapon against malware.

9. Very simple Interface. With no Menu bars cluttering the window.

10. Easy download system. A simple push button method.

The Android Operating System was revealed on November 5, 2007. The Open Handset Alliance had an agreement among businesses which consists of 65 firms to improve the performance of mobile devices. The 65 firms comprise of software, hardware and telecom companies which aims the advancing of the open standards for mobile devices.

The Android is an operating system which controls the mobile device. In this operating system, it includes key applications and a middleware. A middleware is a computer software that connects the applications or the software components. The Android also uses a modified version the Linux Kernel. The Linux Kernel is an operating system with kernel as the central component. It is used by the Linux family with a Unix-like. It is a free and open source software wherein, the users has the right to change, study, use and improve the design with the availability of the source code. With the Linux process, the Android starts and executes an application code when it is needed and shuts down when it is not in use.

The Android is in a Java language. It is a programming language that is the 20th century’s most influential at the moment. It is used from application software to Web applications.

On April 30, 2009 Android released the 1.5 Cupcake for Android. It had the Linux Kernel 2.6.27. It can watch and view videos through the camcorder mode, you can upload videos in YouTube and pictures to Picasa, has a soft keyboard with text prediction, with Bluetooth A2DP and AVRCP support, can connect automatically to a Bluetooth headset within a certain distance, there are new widgets and folders that can be seen on the Home screen, and it has animated screen transitions.

After the Cupcake, there was the 1.6 Donut which is based on Linux Kernel 2.6.29. It was released on September 15, 2009. The 2.0/2.1 clair was out on October 26, 2009. It was based on the Linux Kernel 2.6.29. The Froyo was out in the market on May 20, 2010 and was based on Linux Kernel. The next Android update that will be out but has not yet been released is the Gingerbread.

The confirmed features are support for WebM video playback and the improved copy paste function.

The HTC Dream was the first mobile device that had the Android Operating System. It was released on October 22, 2008. The applications that can be found in the device were the full HTML web browser, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Maps, Google Talk and YouTube. The Android OS smartphone has ranked second among all smartphone OS sold in the United States. The BlackBerry OS ranked first and the iPhone OS ranked third.

Google has launched the latest version of their application to explore the world, Google Earth 5.2. Now you can download this version to incorporate a number of improvements that make this something even larger application and suggests the shots where Google is going.

It is no secret that Google Earth is one of the programs that more surprises and innovates each released version. All brilliant tools and resources are developed in amazing levels. After Google brought photos into great resolution and allow users to visit the ancient Greece, Google Earth now takes you to dive into the oceans. And the news does not stop here; that such a voyage in time to see how the Earth was in 1948? Or, who knows, a walk through the surface of Mars?

To make it even more interesting planetary exploration, all craters and mountains are identified with their respective names. Additional information and even photos can be accessed by clicking on the name of the desired location. Now it only remains to hope that in future versions of Google Earth other planets that comprise our solar system and of course the Moon are present.

Users can now travel in time and see how some points of the planet were at any time between the years 1940 and 2009. An interesting aspect to be noted is the changes that have occurred on planet Earth, as the melting of glaciers and the erosion of the coast.

Now you no longer need to use ALT + TAB to see complete information about the place you are looking for. The definitive option and that more attention this update is the addition of a Google’s own web browser Chrome built into the same application. It will enable us to find sites and access to more detailed information each time you click on a link from the program. That if, to view that information in our default browser should have included a button so that changes depending on the browser that we have installed by default.

In addition to a software quality, Google Earth is very useful for users and students from the most diverse areas. The explosion of streets, avenues, roads, touristic etc. makes the program indispensable for anyone who loves to travel or even as a guide of streets of any city. The world tour does not require even a ticket in Google Earth.

The extra competition in the multimedia and business mobile market can only be good for the consumer.

There are a bunch of really great browsers out there. Although I personally use Google Chrome as my default browser, I think that Opera 10 is one of the browsers worth trying out ultimately. You might find yourself making it your default browser. As a chrome user myself I don’t feel all that alien to Opera 10 because some of its features are pretty similar. Chrome users might find the transition between browsers easy. The first similarity that you’ll find is the speed dial page. It should look like Chrome’s thumbnail page except that it doesn’t show the recently and frequently visited web pages.

Speed dial is actually a more appropriate term for it because it works like a phone’s speed dial. There are nine boxes that you can set to link directly to your favorite site. All you have to do is click on a box that isn’t assigned to link to a website yet and then type in the site that you want to set it to. If you’ve already been visiting sites on the browser, it will automatically sites that you’ve been frequenting and then you can click on the one you want to assign the link to. One of my favorite features on Opera’s speed dial is that you can set it up just like you desktop.

You have a choice in how you want to arrange the dial pad. It might be limited, but at least you have the freedom to move it around. If you’re a minimalist freak like me, you might throw a fit because the boxes can’t be moved from the center of the screen to make the background of the page visible. This leads me to my other favorite fact about it, the speed dial page can be set to have a background, which may not exactly be great for some, but it’s one of the things that attract me to it.

Pretty soon, background images will be drawn up just to make that page look likable. It kinda works like Stylish works for the Mozzila Firefox. Speaking of Firefox, this reminds me of how much lighter Opera 10 is compared to Firefox. While Firefox eats up memory at 180mb, Opera follows with a measly 100mb of memory usage. However, both of them are trumped by Google Chrome, which leads by eating up just 15mb of your computer’s memory. So whether you’re editing photos, playing a game or running some other application that needs a lot of memory, it’s better if you leave your Opera browser running in the background rather than Firefox.

I like the tab features on Opera 10 because hovering your cursor over the tab will show you a thumbnail of the image of the page. This makes it easier since you don’t need to move from your current tab and try to look at the page that you can’t remember. Despite that little convenience, I just don’t see how useful that is. It looks pretty, but that’s all there is to it. Turbo mode is also one of the better features on the new Opera browser, but I just can’t seem to see the big difference in loading speed.

The average user might not see the difference between micro seconds, but users with a slow internet connection might.
