With its dynamic scalablity, flexibility and virtualized resources are provided as a service, Cloud Computing is seen as the dawn of a new era for application services and has received its fair share of plaudits.  With Google Documents, Flickr, Buzzword and Zoho as examples of general purpose applications that use Cloud Computing Technology it is only a matter of time before Cloud Computing is seen as the most viable option for application development and deployment.

With IT Giants such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon all vying for a position within the Cloud Computing space you’d expect there to be a plethora of Cloud based Software Applications  currently available.  Even though this is sure to be the case in the near future, at present Software Testing appears to be the current favoured use of Cloud environments.

A recent survey by Evans Data, an independent research firm that conducts periodic surveys of developers , found that of those using cloud facilities to run applications, 49.8% said they were doing so experimentally or for prototyping; 28.6% for non-critical business applications and 21.6% for business critical applications.  They see Cloud environments as being “good for testing because they can be set and torn down quickly, sometimes at less expense than on-premise facilities”.

The question to answer then is what Software testing tools are available to aid developers and Quality Assurance individuals in their application development and testing procedures.  Software Testing tools that are used for testing of conventional applications are of little use when applied to Cloud Testing as there is a need for tools to allow Software developers and Tester to analyse the network, desktop and implications of changes within the Cloud.

A growing variety of Cloud based Open Source Software Testing Tools are being published.

Cloud Tools for example is a set of tools for deploying, managing and testing Java EE applications on Amazon’s Elastic Computing Cloud (EC2). Containing three main parts, which includes machine images that can be configured to run on Tomcat and Maven & Grails plug-in this is an amazing tool to use for Open source cloud software testing.

PushToTest TestMaker is a distributed test environment that can run tests on test equipment, or in a Cloud Computing environment.  It introducing specific commands to support automatic Cloud Testing services.

Cloud Tools and PushToTest Test Maker represent examples of products that will help shape the future of robust Cloud based Software Testing Applications.  Though the technology is in its infancy, a number of testing tools are emerging that can provide assistance in cloud based software testing.

E-commerce Web site success depends on the site’s user interface. Various levels of user interface designs and functionality are available, depending on your niche online audience and organizational capacities. An easy-to-use interface will increase conversions, your bottom-line, and is the deciding factor for whether or not a visitor explores the site or clicks out. How does one provide an easy user experience for future visitors and clients? Attention must be grabbed at the onset of arriving to a site. A user interface must be just that: Usable for the visitor. This is a challenge and Internet technologists take it as an opportunity for innovation. Nothing is more gratifying than to meet user demands in any way, shape or form. Use of Free/Open Source Software (F/OSS) – software with liberty – by technologies has grown exponentially. The freedoms of open source software bestowed by software developers has driven phenomenal innovation and raised the bar in satisfying customer thirst for creative and efficient software solutions. F/OSS gives developers the freedom to run, distribute, study, modify and improve the software by allowing them source code access.F/OSS has assisted software developers in reducing the gap between businesses and consumer by taking advantage of its “open to innovation” nature. Internet software technologists have started tackling the nuances of e-commerce to make the end-user experience as seamless and hassle-free as possible. Could it be that the evil empire has surrendered? If you haven’t heard Microsoft announced on Tuesday that they will change to a higher level of openness and interoperability with many of its high volume products including an agreement not to sue open-source developers for products that connect to Microsoft software. My question is this: Who locked Bill Gates in a closet?

After all, this is by the company that brought you software bundling and the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance. They are like the spoiled kid down the street who won’t share his toys unless you pay him. The real question is why all of a sudden a change of heart?

Many will point to the fact that Bill Gates is retiring and there is a coup occurring within Microsoft’s corporate culture. If you think about it Microsoft is the most developer oriented company there is. Everyone who is anyone at Microsoft started out as a developer and many of them must have misgivings about the company’s history with regard to open-source software. Others will say, such as Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith that this change in policy is a direct response to the European Union lawsuit that was decided in September which found Microsoft guilty of anticompetitive practices. All of these reasons may have had an effect on this decision but make no mistake this is about Google kicking their behinds in web software and online advertising.

I think Microsoft finally realizes that they have past the point of no return. They are no longer king of the block and if they don’t change the way they are perceived and utilized on the web they are going to be the ones monopolized. Google is everything that Microsoft is not. It is accessible and developer friendly. It’s kind of like Hillary Clinton arguing that she is a better administrator than the visionary Barack Obama. It may be factually correct but who are you going to follow? The company that revolves around developers needs to embrace the developer community. This appears to be a small step in that direction but I need to see more before I’m buying it.

The need for graphics software is something that has grown exponentially along with the development of modern day computers, the internet, and of course, the digital camera. The exact use for it varies not only among the different users, but from the different tasks one single user want to finish – it being photo retouching of the private family album, creating elements for your blog or website, or making a brochure for your private business. And we expect to finish up all these tasks in one program – two at tops. It goes without saying that we expect a lot from the graphics software we choose to utilize. Now, for many users, both professional and the semi-professional home users, Adobe Photoshop is the obvious choice. Some love and swear to Paint Shop Pro, the cheaper alternative from Corel, while millions of pc users are satisfied with what Microsoft and Apple ship with their operating systems. Now, those who fall into the last category, may not find this article as useful as those who belong in the first two, as the simple photo retouching tools they already have installed with their OS serves their needs. For the rest of you however, read on to see what other free software options you have, and why you should, or should not, choose to utilize them instead. I am going to split the article into categories, to help you draw your own conclusion as to what software will do the job, hopefully without costing you a buck.1 Support
Many users of commercial software find this point very important when they’re deciding which package to use. Will the software support my printer/wacom tablet/camera import/scanner/OS – and if it doesn’t, will they offer me help to solve the problem? The answer with commercial packages is – yes and no. All major software developers offer support, usually over email, phone or chat, and as long as they have the answer to your question in their database, they’ll give it to you. For more complex problems however, the poor, underpaid technician may not be able to help you – and this is, contrary to popular belief, one of the big advantages of Open Source Software (OSS). OSS has the advantage of being followed by a strong community – not only with graphics artists that take use of the software, but also the programmers that actually helped develop the code itself. In other words, you may be able to get your answer directly from the source, and even have someone help you create a patch especially for you. That’s something Adobe, Corel and Microsoft would never offer you. On the other hand, getting those answers may be a bit more complicated than picking up the phone. It may take some forum browsing, a few emails, and some waiting before the problem is solved. Now, the last kind of software release, which is also free, is from professional software developers that release their software for free. They may have different reasons for doing this. Some release their older versions for free while the newer versions cost money – like a demo solution, only better (remember, that version was the newest just a year ago). Some do it just for the advertising – perhaps they have some other software that they’re selling at a higher price, and just want to get your attention. The backside of downloading these alternatives is that most of them offer none or very limited support – in other words, if you’re having problems, you’re on your own.
To sum it up, Open Source projects may actually offer the best support in the long run, even if it takes some research to find your answers, but professional software are tested for months before release, usually have support for most drivers and hardware built in, and may therefore remove the need for the support in the first place. If you need new software for a project quickly, to reach a deadline, you may be safer off going for a commercial package. If, on the other hand, you want to learn some graphics editing, perhaps do some retouching on your private photos, I would not let this stop me.2 What does the program actually offer?
This is another important point for many – how far can you stretch the programs technical abilities before it snaps? This is actually kind of a tricky question, because most major software packages – both free and commercial – give you the option to install third party plug-ins. (for those who do not know what this is, it is a piece of code that is loaded along with the software to serve one particular need – in most cases to use a filter on an image that the application did not offer in the first place). The number of plug-ins available for OSS is big – the number for Photoshop is vast. However, more does not necessarily mean better, and you should not let the number of plug-ins available guide you when purchasing software. Also, again in the commercial vs free packages, it is a question of price; most major Photoshop plug-ins are not free – all OSS plug-ins are.
Having mentioned the plug-ins, let’s see now what the programs offer themselves. Photoshop has set the standard for image manipulation software for 15 years, and it’s as far as the author can see, impossible to design a program in this genre without being inspired by it. That being said, it does not mean that freeware alternatives cannot stand up to its standards, but it does mean that you’ll rarely find something in a free package that Photoshop did not already offer. Having tested most of the major freeware pretty thoroughly, what I have discovered is that they offer pretty much the same abilities as Photoshop does – but with 85% the usability. In other words, it can get most of the work done, but not all, and what it can do, it won’t do as streamlined as Photoshop. It’s worth mentioning though, that I am talking about advanced editing here – not simple retouching and drawing. For the photo editor – the free ones will undoubtedly to the job for you. For the internet graphics editor – it will undoubtedly also get the job done. For the advanced graphics/photo editor, the last 15% can make you raise an eyebrow and wonder why you ever considered free software. The conclusion is that the major freeware packages will cover the needs for 90% of the users.3 Hardware Issues
Will the program work with my printer? How about my Wacom? My digital camera? Actually most of the hardware compability is dependent on your operating system. For example, some versions of Mac OSX did not support tablets, and a wacom would therefore be treated like a regular mouse – thus removing the pressure sensitivity. The same thing is true if you do not install the correct drivers in Windows.
As for the printer – most software that includes support for printing, relies on the drivers you installed when you first connected the printer. In other words, if printing works in other programs, there’s no reason it won’t work when you’re working on the graphics. There are some other printing issues that are worth thinking about though, I will cover these in the next section.4 More printing issues
Apart from driver support, there are some issues you should think about if you are going to print your artwork. Color management, for example, can be tricky, and not even Photoshop had a good enough printing dialogue until CS3 was released. Again, this depends on your use of the software – professional users may need total control of how their documents are rendered for print. If you’re using it to print your family photos on the other hand, you may not need these settings (and you probably won’t understand them either). Photoshop does give you better control over your printing profiles – but it’s only necessary for the advanced user.
Having read this article, I hope you are able to reach a conclusion. There is no doubt that free open-source projects have reached a point where they are nearly as advanced as expensive, commercial software, and can cover most of your needs. As much as I love photoshop, I also love the open-source community, and nothing would make me happier than if I could save you a few hundred bucks! My website www.freegraphicstools.com contains some links and reviews if you are ready to try out some of the Photoshop alternatives. You may be surprised that even Illustrator, 3D studio, Adobe Premiere, After Effects and Microsoft Office all have freeware alternatives that are rich in functionality!

Open source software seems to be only the tip of the iceberg. There is such a modern tendency to make projects more open. The reasons for it are: increasing demand for speed of project launch; global competition; Internet as a medium for communication. Actually, all Enterprise 2.0 aspects overlap with ‘openness’ issue. Personally me, I love the term ‘freeconomics’ instead of Enterprise 2.0. You can choose whatever is better for you. The goal of this post is to investigate the requirements to a platform for open projects and open organizations. Speaking of open source software, the most comprehensive guide is written by Karl Fogel in his book ‘Producing Open Source Software’. The questions covered are good enough to be listed here:

But we’re sure there are more people interested in ‘openness’ then software developers. Moreover, it’s not necessarily ‘open source’ people who need to be open. If you’re proud of what you’re doing. If you do not separate your business life from your friends life (you do projects with friends, yeah). If you want the best talents and experts to help you in making your project. If your business is searching for investors, partners and new specialists to work with. There’s no other way but to go into the global sea of communicating with people :) There’re beautiful samples of non-software open projects done as businesses: ‘Elephants Dream’, the first open movie; Engineers Without Borders, semi-volunteers work across the globe, dmoz and many more. So, here’re our requirements to Enterprise 2.0 technical platform:

Well, I’m not a zealot of total openness. If your business idea should remain secret, let it be secret. But remember, it won’t last for long.

Microsoft is probably the richest software corporation in the world. They make money on selling software plus they also make money when you need help with one of their software products by charging you for support. I remember when Microsoft released DOS 6.0 and millions of computers around the world crashed because the software had a lot of bugs. You would think then that a company would have to fix this problem free of charge but not Microsoft, they charged you for the upgrade to DOS 6.2 which fixed the problem in the product DOS 6.0.

Over the past decade I have spent a fortune on all sorts of different software products but those days are over. I have found a great solution where the software is free, you just either make a donation or pay for support. Now with this type of software, besides being relatively inexpensive, you a free to use it as is or if you are a programmer you can modify it. Most of this software will either run as a stand alone product or software like a Content Manager you install it to the host where you have web hosting and you can just run it in a browser like IE.

I used to use Dreamweaver to design all my websites but we’re talking at least several hundred dollars just for the Dreamweaver and if you want the complete suite which is Macromedia studio then you’re looking at spending over a thousand dollars. Now with this package the only support that is included is the stuff that is in the manuals that comes with the package. If you want support in plain english then you are going to have to pay for additional support.

Nowadays I am using an Open Source product called VNU which has a Windows version but it also has a version for the Macintosh and for Linux which I’m thinking about converting over to. Rather than paying for a package like Microsoft office I am using OpenOffice which is a free open source solution. OpenOffice has a lot more features than the standard Microsoft Office, it incorporates Adobe acrobat by letting you create PDF documents.

I just upgraded my computer and gave my old one to my younger brother. Now this old computer has windows on it but knowing my brother if he ever gets a virus he will not be able to handle it. Knowing this I am thinking about converting my brother over to Linux because all he uses now is Dreamweaver and MS office and I think he would be perfectly happy with open source software. Plus if there are 10 viruses that can hit Windows then there would only be less than one virus for the Linux operating system.

In the old days Linux like Unix was all done at command prompt but nowadays they have a graphical interface which looks like a Windows clone. Over the years I have bought a lot of software that I later discovered somebody had obtained as open source and then modified it. If you want to make money as a designer of software then rather then starting from ground zero you can get an open source application and just add a few modifications. This will greatly reduce the time it takes for designing a new software app…

Now another kind of software that is practically free is what is called freeware. The difference between open source and freeware is that the Freeware application has already been compiled and you are not able to modify it or even replicate the coding. I, myself, when looking for software have mainly just been looking for applications that I can use. Usually I will see an advertisement for a product with a lot of features that I would find useful. I then look for either a Freeware or open source package that has the same features. This is one way that I save money.

If you want more information on what you can do with open source software they all follow a general license which if you do a search on a site like Google you will be able to find many references regarding this open license.

Do you think you ‘own’ copyrighted software you ‘purchase’? Think beneath the skin. Do you really own the software for which you shelled out a significant sum? The answer is a solid NO. No, you are not the owner of the proprietary software that you think you purchase. Instead, you purchase only license to use the program for your purposes. When you pay for a piece of software, what you actually do is paying a license fee plus support costs.

Most times we don’t think we need to read the license agreement that comes with proprietary software. As you read, you will understand that you are only allowed to use the software as it is. Sure you are promised some support, but how many of end users actually use such an option?

If you owned the piece of software that you purchased, you would be free to make any modifications to the software. You will be able to add new features or remove unwanted features. Think if it is possible with proprietary software solutions.

With open source software, a developer is free to modify any software he purchased under open source agree and resell it for a profit. It is however imperative for the developer to release the software under open source license. He or she may make any number of modifications and keep the source code of the developed version to themselves, provided they use it for their own purposes and not distribute to others.

Thus you will find open source software is not just about reduced costs. It also gives you better control over your business activities. The most shining example of enterprise open source software is Google™. The company that presently diversified into many different business areas from its original search engine use open source software in their servers located throughout the world.

According to Google™ it is taking your destiny to your own hands. There is no need to wait for the software developer company come up with changes or modifications. In house developers make the necessary modification in a matter of days or even hours. It would take many weeks for the developer company to come up with a solution for immediate problems.

Are you ready to use open source software for your enterprise? Are you willing to take advantage of lower costs, true rights of ownership and upgrading a solution according to your specific requirements? It is time to think deeply about the subject.http://www.jbilling.com

Billing is one important area of all small and big businesses. Billing software market is crowded that choice of one becomes so difficult for a start up business owner. The question is will billing software survives the flood of software suits or packages offered by small and big software developing companies.

It should. The problem open software community today faces is the lack of skills or interest to learn the basics of programming and working of programs.

People also seek comfort zones all the time. We all live in an age of instant gratification and we are hardly programmed to wait or try hard to get something. This is the general trend and they will go for easily available packaged solutions, instead of trying to learn what it is about the working behind the things they see.

Needless to say a billing cum accounting system will, to a great extent take the load of learning accounting from your shoulders. With Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) the modern mantra, it is quite understandable if a few companies have taken the initiative to make major inroads into the field of free open source billing software.

It is necessary for the user to have a basic coding and programming knowledge to tweak the pieces of software to a workable suite. Then again the attempts in that direction should be recognized.

When introducing an open-source billing software, it is sure to be met with much skepticism and prejudices. No open source software is an exception. The whole hearted attempts from skilful people keep the trend alive. This project has been the hot favorite at SourceForge.net for a few months now.

A recent addition to free software, specifically billing software is JBilling, located at http://www.jbilling.com. The open source software works with all major operating systems and supports My SQL, Postgre SQL and Hypersonic. It runs on JBOSS. It is thus a 100% free open source billing system that supports recurring billing, automatic payment processing using credit cards etc. It also handles web-based interface directly with end customers.

There are also different advantages of this specific billing software. Most of the processes are automated. Though it is not a new thing in open source world, business persons appreciate automatic invoicing, billing, payment processing, etc. What more? JBilling v 1.0.4 also accepts online payment via credit card.

The software thus easily becomes an alternative to proprietary billing systems.http://www.jbilling.com

A content management system provides the foundation for an easy to maintain a website. A key factor in deciding which CMS to use should be the customization factor. When I say customization factor, I mean the how difficult it is to develop custom functionality particular to your project. Some CMS systems make this easy while others present more of a challenge.

A minor phenomenon has swept the Web world in the last few years. Like many things in the realm of software, it was over hyped. I’m talking about the open-source Web development framework called Ruby on Rails. The RoR market is more than ready for anything that gives them visibility into their applications, whether that is on the developer’s desktop or the running production application.

Ruby on Rails, also known as RoR, is an open source web programming application framework meant for faster web applications. The Ruby programming is a free program and is constantly improved by Ruby on Rails Programmers to make it more better and user friendly. Ruby on Rails development comes with features such as Model View Controller architecture that separates data from logic i.e. presentation layer and helps in organizing application program. RoR database access library simplifies data handling. Rails framework has an extensive AJAX library which it uses to generate AJAX code and the required Java script is automatically generated.

Benefits of Ruby on Rails include:

1. Rails works well with various web servers and databases as it is really easy to deploy web solutions using Rails.

2. With Ruby on Rails work is done faster otherwise before web applications which were using languages such as PHP, Java, ASP, could take ages to complete and in the end you may just have a large stack of unmentionable codes.

3. Rails provide fast and easy development with quality results.

4. With Ruby programming language you need to write few lines of code in comparison to other programming language to reach the same result.

5. The Ruby on rails framework software also supports MySQL, SQL, SQL Server, DB2 and Oracle.

6. ROR CMS provides very flexible solutions, final output depends on user choice no pre-format is mandatory, image cropping, resizing, multi-language support, excellent usability, sort able tree-based admin interface, layout editor, scaffold template is created.

7. Rails applications are Tailor made to perfection for an individual or an enterprise and best fit for all kind of web application. Rails architecture is used and most preferred for development of cms, e-commerce, portals, collaboration, and community.

The new performance management and profiling tools are important additions to the RoR development community as RoR moves from being a hobbyist development language to a bona fide enterprise development framework. Most of our attention now is moving over to the general rails environment and ecosystem creating tools and environments for development and production so that people can work better with and on their rails applications.

It may be news to many but the most buzzing business life line today – the World Wide Web – was never conceived to be commercial. It was meant to share information and benefit mutually.

Had it not be for the Open Source initiative that started in 1998, the cost of web site development services would not have been as down to the earth as they are now. Empowering the web with free to use and extend software like PHP, Linux, Ruby on Rails, Word Press, Fire fox and many others, Open source has been keeping the web development service affordable, scalable and effective, in spite of the aggressive commercial penetration of the platform.

In fact, PHP open source programming language is the most utilized web programming language across the globe. Statistics reveal that more than 1 million web servers and way beyond 20 million websites are presently running with the help of PHP in the backend. Defying any competition per se, the language allows web site development service providers to be extremely quick and effective at creating even the most complicated of websites, conveniently coordinating with huge databases in their backend. Popular websites like Wikipedia, Yahoo! and Face book are prevailing instances of PHP in action.

On similar lines, Ruby on Rails (RoR) is also considered as a powerful tool in the hands of the web development service providers. RoR allows web site development services worldwide to design, develop and implement the most critical of web applications on quicker turn around time and for the most reasonable cost.
