What do you need to build your own custom computer? Here are ten steps to building the best custom computer:

  1. Pick Your Processor
  2. Select The Motherboard
  3. Choose Your Case & Power Supply
  4. Decide On Components (memory, video cards, ect.)
  5. Prepare Your Workspace
  6. Build Your Computer
  7. Power On & Test
  8. Install The Operating System
  9. Install Updated Drivers
  10. Install Your Applications & Software

Choose Your Processor & Motherboard

You should choose the best processor and motherboard you can afford. The processor you choose will ultimately determine which motherboards you can pick from. Motherboard electronics are restricted to using only specific processors that are designed to work with them. For instance: Socket A, Socket 939, Socket 940, Socket AM2, Socket AM2+, and AM3 are designed to work with AMD Athlon & Phenom processors; while Socket 478, LGA socket 775, and the new LGA1366 are for Intel processors. Shopping online at computer hardware stores is the best source for motherboard bundles consisting of a processor, motherboard electronics, and memory; this can be a good way to save some cash, and make the selection & compatibility process much easier.

Remember when shopping for motherboards to pay close attention to the computer hardware peripherals you intend on using with your custom computer system. The chipset of the motherboard determines which integrated components (graphics, sound, Ethernet, etc.) are included on your motherboard. Typically integrated graphics aren’t as good as dedicated video cards, they’re usually ok for simple office tasks (anyone wanting to play games, perform desktop publishing, or use the computer for home theater should purchase a separate video card for these tasks).

Choosing The Best Computer Case & Power Supply

The plethora of custom computer cases is amazing, with hundreds of shapes, sizes, and styles available. I recommend that you closely examine the features of any computer case your thinking about purchasing. Some awesome looking PC cases are a real pain to work with, and sometimes are low quality.

I also recommend you look for cases that don’t require the use of hand tools. These “tool-less” cases are usually of the best quality, and don’t require much prior computer building experience to upgrade or replace parts. Most cases and motherboards use the ATX form factor, standardizing the sizes of the components and all of the power connections. Be sure to pick the correct motherboard for your case.

The right custom computer case can make working with your system a dream, but picking the wrong one will make it a nightmare. Though there are plenty of computer cases plus the power supply for less than $50, it is highly recommended that you spend more to acquire a case that has a high quality power supply, can be worked on without the use of hand tools, allows for multiple upgrades over time, and still looks attractive on the outside.

The vast majority of motherboards and computer cases are designed for the ATX form factor. It’s critical that your motherboard match the form factor of your case. Be aware of the fact that other standards do exist and are available. Pay close attention and note the form factor when buying your case. It’s imperative that the motherboard can be secured to the case correctly.

The best looking case may not be worth it if installing your computer components becomes a hassle. Be sure to purchase a case with helpful features. Removable motherboard trays, tool-less drive carriers, and multiple fan locations for cooling the system, are a few things to look for in your new case. Cooling is one of the most critical aspects to the long term health of your PC. Be sure your case has several locations to mount fans. Look for the best computer case you can afford and you won’t regret it.

Cheaper cases will often come with cheaper power supplies that may not be able to power a high-end, custom computer. Some of the more expensive cases don’t come with a power supply at all. This can be a good thing because it lets you choose your own. If you install a lot of new components inside your PC, you may overtax your power supply. So before you buy a power supply, make sure you get one designed to handle all of the components you plan on building your computer with.

Some computer cases are sold with a preinstalled power supply, examine it closely – your computer’s power requirements may exceed the wattage capacity of the preinstalled supply. You can use this recommended wattage guide to help you determine the power supply you will need for your custom computer system.

Component Wattage Required:

  • Motherboard 15-30 watts
  • Low-End CPU 20-50 watts
  • Mid To High-End CPU 40-100 watts
  • RAM 7 watts per 128MB of memory
  • PCI Add-In Card 5 watts
  • Low To Mid-Range Video Card 20-60 watts
  • High-End Video Card 60-100 watts
  • IDE Hard Drive 10-30 watts
  • Optical Drives 10-25 watts

You may need to purchase a higher output power supply for your new custom PC. Also remember the air flow, your power supply provides a great deal of system cooling and ventilation! Try to get the best power supply that meets your computer system’s wattage requirements.

Install As Much Memory As You Can Afford

Today’s computer systems can perform a wide array of tasks, but these applications require more memory then they did just 2-3 years ago. With more demanding software being run on your computer, you will need more system memory to keep your computer performing at optimal levels.

Upgrading a PC’s RAM is one of the most effective computer hardware upgrades possible. This upgrade procedure will help your computer keep more programs open, accelerate graphics programs and games dramatically, while also increasing your computer’s responsiveness.

The memory modules most computer systems accept are:

  • 184-pin DDR2 DIMMs
  • DDR2 DUAL
  • DDR3

The type of memory you buy depends on the motherboard you choose. For best results, choose the fastest type of memory module that works with your motherboards electronics. Install 2GB – 4GB for the best performance with today’s operating systems (Windows XP can only utilize about 3GB of system memory, whereas Windows Vista and Windows 7 can manage much more memory). Always look for the best computer memory your motherboard is compatible with.

This concludes Part 1 of this walkthrough guide. Part 2 will discuss the necessary preparations needed to begin building the best custom computer. Finally you will be given a step-by-step approach to building your own custom computer system.

A power outage is an inconvenience for everyone. The hassle involved ranges from the inability to blow dry your hair to someone on oxygen being unable to get the air they need. Power generation systems allow you to have seamless power regardless what the circumstances are around you.

For a nursery person with greenhouses full of exotic or tropical plants a power outage could spell disaster for their economic forecast. A bakery or pizzeria would be in dire straits with a power outage of any significance. For a farmer with a flock of newborn chicks or pen full of piglets, lack of heat could be the end of the next generation. The business world shuts down immediately with power outages with computers being unable to operate; cash registers can’t even open without power for stores to operate.

Along with the economical need for generators there are physical needs. A house without power long term would be not only cold but extremely inconvenient. People need to heat water to bath and heat for cooking. Campers have long used generators as their power source.

Hospitals and nursing care facilities, surgical centers could never be without power and are equipped with large commercial grade power generation systems. Firehouses and police stations are dependent on power for the safety of the community.

There are natural gas, diesel and gasoline generators for a variety of uses from homes to hospitals, depending on the need. In the case of a crises or natural disaster personal independence would hold much security.

SVSR, Inc. (http://www.svsrinc.com/whoweare.html/) was started to offer specialty vehicle customers a facility to service, repair and refurbish their mobile products such as power generation systems. Ryan Coisson is a freelance writer.

When it comes to privacy and PC security a computer Trojan is your biggest enemy. A Trojan is actually a program that can steal your private information and send it over to the maker of the computer Trojan with out you ever knowing about it. One of the most common ways that people use to spread Trojans is by sending files to users over various chat systems.

When users download files from the internet using P2P software often times the programs they download can carry a computer Trojan, viruses and worms that can not only steal your information but can damage your computer. This is probably one reason why people are warned so much about P2P file sharing systems.

What harm can a computer Trojan do?

There are quite a number of computer Trojans out there that get on to your computer and begin to access private information that is stored locally. This information is then sent via the internet without you ever knowing about it.

This computer Trojan usually don’t cause much damage since it try to ensure that they are not detected. Many computer Trojans also serve as a backdoor that opens network port that allow other applications to access your computer remotely.

The major difference between computer worms and computer Trojans is that Trojans don’t replicate themselves. They also don’t seek to infect other computers. What a computer Trojan does is enters your computer without being detected and allowing the attacker unlimited access to your computer and the data stored on it.

Many computer Trojans allow an attacker to take over your computer. Computer Trojans are used to steal passwords, credit card numbers, and other private information on our computer.

Computer Trojans are sneaky programs that at times cannot be detected by virus scanning software. The reason being that these programs can easily masquerade as harmless programs. They don’t do much damage which is unlike a virus which is built to damage.

In order to avoid getting hit by a computer Trojan it is imperative that you keep your computer software up to date. User a good firewall software with strict permissions. This will allow the program to prompt you when there is an unauthorized program trying to access the internet.

You can then take a look at the program and determine if you really want the program to access the internet and then either grant or turn down permission. This helps stops a computer Trojan from transmitting your personal information over the internet to an attacker.

You should also keep your virus scanning software up to date. Make sure that it is regularly updated via the auto update feature. You also need to make sure that you only download programs from known and trusted sources.

Do not use P2P software because at times a well designed computer Trojan can pass though your fire wall and virus scanning program cleverly. In order to remain one step ahead you need to take the proper precautions to protect your computer.

It is also a good idea to constantly keep an eye for any suspicious activity on your computer. Try also not to store sensitive information unprotected on your system.

To protect your PC from a Computer Trojan you can use programs like Norton Internet Security 2010. You will find a review about Norton Internet Security 2010 at http://www.SmartSoftwareReview.com

IX Web Hosting is a medium sized web host that was founded in 1999. They currently host over 150, 000 domains from their base in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. IX Web offer budget shared hosting solutions for the mass market. They tend to aim their products at the sought of customers who believe more is ….. well….. more! If this sounds like you then read on. If however, you are type of person who feels that quality is the top priority; and vast amounts of bandwidth and features are less important, then you should read our reviews of Hostgator, Lunarpages, and Bluehost instead.

Features

IX offer 5 different hosting packages, the “Expert Plan” (EP), “Business Plus” (BP), “Unlimited Pro” (UP), and two Windows plans. They all come with a vast array of features, you can find a full feature list and product comparison on the IX website here. Below is rundown of the main components of the Linux plans.

Disk Space -100GB with the EP, 300GB from the BP, and unlimited if you sign up to the UP plan. These are all completely crazy numbers for a budget shared hosting plan!

Bandwidth – 1000GB, 1500GB, and 2000GB respectively. Again ludicrously excessive numbers. Just imagine what would happen if all IX’s customers actually tried use all that bandwidth! Luckily 99.999% of people never will. Just to put it in to context, those are sought of bandwidth allocations you get when using your own dedicated server (which usually costs at least $200/month), so when the price for the EP starts at just $3.95/month we know that something doesn’t add up!

Number of domains – 2, 8 and 16. So even the cheapest plan allows us to host two websites, where as the BP and UP plans give us the best chance to try and use all those bandwidth and storage resources; allowing us to host up to 8, and 16 websites on the one account.

Site Studio – This website building software comes with all hosting plans, its basic and easy to use, and will be very useful to those who are new to web design.

Free domain name registration – This means that IX will register your domain name for you, free, for as long as you host with them. EP comes with 1 free domain name, BP with 3, and UP with 5. This is probably our favorite feature of IX’s hosting plans, especially on the BP and UP packages. If you plan to host multiple domains then this offer could save you a significant amount on domain registrations.

Search engine submission service – Free with all plans.

99.9% Uptime guarantee – Server uptime is guaranteed to be above 99.9% n any 12 month period.

30 Day money back guarantee.

Customer service and technical support

IX give us phone support (toll free if you live in the U.S), live chat, and e-mail ticket services, all are available 24/7, 365 days/year. These services tick all the right boxes, but in terms of the quality they are way behind the likes of Lunarpages, Bluehost, and Hostgator. We advise that you test them out yourself first, to see if their service level is acceptable to you.

Performance

This area is always likely to be where IX is going to have problems; when you oversell resources like IX do with their disk space and bandwidth allowances, server performance inevitably suffers. This means that you are going to get a more sluggish and probably less reliable service when compared to other web hosting providers. These other providers tend to charge more money, offer less features, but crucially, they often deliver more quality when it comes to server performance.

With regards to the control panel supplied with IX’s plans we were very disappointed. Unfortunately they use the dreaded H-Sphere control panel, its performance is swift, but its layout and design are poor and make it look cheap. It’s no match for the likes of cPanel or Vdeck. There is a full working demo on the IX website; we strongly advise you try it out first before signing up with IX. If you think that you can live with it then fair enough, IX might still be for you. We should probably mention that some people are fans of H-Sphere, and still swear it’s the best control panel out there, though they are definitely in the minority!

Our Verdict

Well, if price is your first consideration you definitely should look to IX, there “Expert Plan” is pretty much the cheapest “proper” web hosting package currently available. However, if you can stretch to an extra dollar/month we believe that a better choice would be the “ProLogic” plan from StartLogic, review here. The other IX plans offer even more, but their price tags bring them into competition with the real heavy hitters of the shared hosting industry. In our opinion it’s difficult to see why you would choose the IX “Business Plus” plan over Bluehost. Or the “Unlimited Pro” over Hostgator or midPhase. The only reason you may want to choose the “Business Plus” or “Unlimited Pro” packages, ahead of the aforementioned alternatives, is due to the multiple free domain registration features of both, which would certainly make them more appealing from a value for money standpoint.

With more and more people and businesses venturing online, the demand for web hosting has also increased. This has led to in influx of new players offering web hosting at various prices and with various services, each trying to get a piece of the market. However, this makes it that much more difficult when trying to choose a quality web host for your personal or business needs.

Cheap Web Hosting

Depending on your needs, you might want to consider a cheap hosting account for starters. You can get a low cost hosting service for around $5 – $10 per month and that will allow you to at least get up and running. From there, you can decide if that service meets your needs or if you need to upgrade to a more feature-rich plan.

Reseller Hosting for Multiple Sites

If you plan on hosting multiple sites, a reseller account is definitely in order. With a reseller account, you can generally set up as many domains as you want as long as you stay within the disk space and bandwidth limits for your particular plan. This can give you the ability to host hundreds, if not thousands of sites on a single account for around $25 – $30 per month.

Virtual Private Servers or Dedicated Hosting

For added security and stability, you can choose to purchase a Virtual Private Server or dedicated hosting account. That will cost somewhere around $100 per month or more. In addition, it may or may not be managed which means that you might have to take care of the routine maintenance on the server if that service is not part of your plan.

Features to Consider

Whichever option you choose, you should also be aware of some other key features to look for. First, you’ll need to decide which operating system – either Windows or Unix/Linux typically. The choice you make will depend on what type of scripts or other software you might want to run on the server.

It’s probably a good idea to use a control panel to manage your site, so you will have to make sure your hosting provider offers this as part of the plan. Cpanel and Plesk are two of the more popular ones. This decision may also be impacted by the specific software you intend to use on your site.

Support is also an important feature. Be sure your hosting company has 24×7 email support at the very least. Preferably, in addition to that, they will have online chat and phone support also.

Selecting a right FrontPage hosting service for your website is not an easy task since thousands of web hosting providers all over the world are offering almost identical web hosting packages.

Generally, the hosting plans that support the FrontPage extensions in their hosting can be called FrontPage web hosting. If you require to utilize all the functions that are supported in the MS FrontPage to work for your website, support for the FrontPage extensions in your web hosting space is necessary.

The main advantage of this way is that it is damn easy to create the websites and it is more easy to publish your website within your web space. Most of the hosting plans include FrontPage extensions installed on their servers since this feature offers solution to the beginners who are willing to try designing web page without HTML knowledge.

The common benefits of FrontPage hosting are:

1. Many FrontPage web hosting providers support Domain alias.
2. Stopgap domain is provided for testing purposes.
3. Support for ASP, ASP. Net, and SSI are usually provided.
4. Support for pre-installed DLLs that can be used for free.
5. Support for PHP, Perl, and Cold Fusion.

Some of the FrontPage hosting is limited for installing custom components. Even you can contact the service provider for including this feature. Multiple domain hosting is also supported along with support for sub domains and third level domains. In addition to the above facilities, some FrontPage web hosting providers offer MS SQL Server manager, custom error document, server side image maps, password protected directories and your own CGI bin directory for best customer support.

Some websites offer bonuses like free domain name, free website builder, preinstalled free scripts (written in PHP), search engine site submission, etc. In addition to this, you can avail concession while registering additional domains and link popularity check. Hence do enquire with the web hosting providers about the bonuses and the also the type of stable and fast server (say Linux web hosting coupled with Apache is considered to be the best).

You can also expect site statistics from where you can have a graphical look and the number of hits for your website. The IP address of the visitors and the countries from where your site has been visited also being monitored and submitted when you called the same for your reference.

As a free and powerful Content Management system, Drupal is mostly used for creation and management of diversity content such as community web portals, FAQs, and knowledge bases, etc. It can be used both for personal and corporate websites. If you have chosen it for your website, it is very important to find a reliable Drupal-specialized host.

But there are many mistakes you can see in the Drupal webmaster worlds.

1) Drupal Hosting is Very Special

This is probably the most common thing we can feel from Drupal webmasters, especially for those beginners. The fact is that every hosting which can support php and MySQL, and grant you with the write permission to the root directory, then you will be all set. The only thing you need to care about is the connection speed between web server and MySQL database server. Some web hosting companies havn’t optimized the connection between those two and cause some performance issues for Drupal. But this issue doesn’t exist for the most of the current leading shared web hosting service providers.

2) Web Hosting Companies with “Drupal” included in their Name are Drupal-Specialized Host

It’s fun that there are many companies who declare they are dedicated to the web hosting for Drupal, and place “drupal” into their companies’ name, such as drupalhosting, drupalvaluehosting, etc. This is really strange if you have read the first mistake I list in above. If a company can provide good solution for Drupal, it definitely can provide the same level support to other open source application like WordPress, Joomla. So why he wants to place it in his company name, and keep the other webmasters out of door. This is not good for the growth of their business. A company even doesn’t know how to take care their business, how can they protect your business.

This type of company is usually very small, they actually cannot provide with you reliable support. There is no surprised to me when I see many complaints of them in Drupal forum.

3) The Experience Shared in Durpal.Org forum is Trusted

Hosting threads created in Drupal.org forum are probably the most scammed forum I have seen in all those very reputed web sites. It’s allowed you to simply paste an advertisement to there. Currently drupal.org is considering to close their hosting section. I think this is a good decision.

So, for a Drupal webmaster, in order to get a good hosting solution, what you really need to do is to find a reliable Linux web hosting service provider. That’s all.

Any website that is located on the internet is viewable by anyone who comes to it. To be able to have your website on the internet, you need a service provider. It is like a location for you to have your website in the internet. The kind of service that allows you to do that is called the web hosting service. There are many kinds of web hosting services available out there and 2 of the most common or mostly used is the shared hosting or the dedicated hosting.

Obviously there is difference in these 2 types of hosting. To put it in simple words, each has a different control given to the user to manage their website. Therefore, we need to know what the differences are before we choose the kind of web hosting we want.

For a shared hosting, its name already gives you a clear idea on what it offers. Shared means multiple websites hosted in the same location. So, in a server, there are multiple websites sharing the space, bandwidth and so on. This type of hosting is ideal for small business as well as new webmasters who are trying out for the first time. Over an all, it is very usable but it has some limitations in its resources.

As you are paying for the service, the provider will provide you with software, security, maintenance and support. As for the users, they will get a certain level of control with the control panel of their choice.

Shared hosting provides control panels like Cpanel PLeask and VDeck. With these control panels, users can really manage their websites. As for the serve, it is maintain or manage by more complex control panel like Helm and DirectAdmin. However, there are also some shared hosting that uses Linux web hosting and they will use either Windows or FreeBSD control panel. A Linux system is know to be compatible with most of the current control panel and therefore making it more acceptable in the market.

Due to the fact that shared hosting is shared, you can guess that the price required owning a website with this kind of web hosting would be more affordable. The fact that it is cheaper is the reason why many people turn to it. They can still get multiple database, management tools and many other service when they choose shared hosting. Even though that they know that it is more likely to face security issue and probability of their website occurring downtime, this is something that the are willing to accept.

On the contrary, a dedicated hosting is a hosting that only hosts one website in the entire server. Therefore, the user has total usage over the server. They do not have to share space, bandwidth or any other feature with any other website. It is most suitable for websites that expect a heavy amount of traffic. With more bandwidth, they have nothing to worry about. Users of dedicated hosting also have the power to choose the type of software that they want to use in the website. They also have the same capability of having multiple domains.

To sum it all up, a user of a dedicated web hosting service will have total control over their website. This provides them with freedom but they themselves have to make sure of the stability of the operation of their website. This is not something complex but very simple. All the skills that the user needs are at an administrative level. Users must also make sure that their website is monitored constantly to maintain security. However, if the user no knowledge about the technical requirements, the hosting provider does provide additional support and service to help users of the dedicated hosting.

In case you’re searching for the right dedicated hosting service, check out Hostgator dedicated hosting. In my opinion, they are one of the best dedicated hosting providers.

Every day more and more people are getting online and more and more people are creating websites. It is now seen more as a necessity to have your own website, rather than a luxury. A website is a great way to be creative and show the public what your business offers. It enables people that may never before have been able to access your business, to view your services. It is not just important to design an effective website; you also need to make sure you choose the right type of web hosting for your business.

Web hosting is what you purchase so that you can publish your website to the Internet. It is important to research the different kinds to ensure that you choose the right one for your website. Let’s have a look at some of the different kinds of hosting.

Shared Hosting

For most people, just starting out, a shared server host is the best option. You can get shared hosting for a very cheap price. This form of hosting allows many web masters to share a single server. The company will make sure the server is secure and will troubleshoot any problems that may crop up. It is very simple to sign up for shared hosting. There is also a lot of competition, so you are sure to find a great deal.

It is important to ensure that the hosting package you choose meets your requirements. They should provide full 24 hour support, along with an easy to use control panel and the scripts and applications that you need. If feel that you need extra security and space you may wish to consider the option of dedicated web hosting.

Dedicated Hosting

Dedicated web hosting is far more advanced than shared hosting. With dedicated hosting you can rent your own server with your own IP. You will also have more flexibility and control over your website and you will be able to host more than one site on your server if you require.

Dedicated hosting is far more reliable and secure than shared hosting. It is well worth thinking about if your business deals in monetary transactions online, as your customers details will be more secure. Your visitors will also experience faster loading times. There are several companies to choose from and as with any form of hosting it is worth reading online reviews to determine you are choosing the best host for you.

Windows Hosting

Once you have decided whether you require shared or dedicated hosting, you will then need to choose the platform you wish to host your website on. Many shared hosts just offer Linux hosting, but some also offer Windows hosting. Basically Windows web hosting will support the windows platform while Linux web hosting will support the Linux platform.

 Ecommerce Hosting

Before you publish your website you should think about what kind of website you will be creating. Do you want to create a personal website, or is the website for business? If you are planning to create a web store and do business online you may want to consider ecommerce hosting. Linux is an open source Operating System, which does not need high licensing fees like other propriety software and Operating Systems. It is one of the most reliable and stable Operating Systems in the market. You are free to download and use it without spending a penny.

Benefits Of Linux Hosting

* Linux web hosting is economical and cheaper due to open source and free licensing, usually Linux hosting packages are cheaper as compared to window hosting packages.

* Linux is a strong and reliable operating system on server side, servers can stay up for months and some time years without any reboot. One of my server stayed up and still up from 1.5 year, WOW! Which is impossible in Windows.

* Linux is easy and has many products that run cross platform which means you can run Apache web server on your windows machine.

* Linux hosting is more secure and reliable, it has very less security holes as compared to windows, also you are free from the tension of viruses.

* Linux provide more control, as it is open source and you are able to compile and customize it according to your needs.

Benefits Of Window Hosting

MS Windows is a user friendly Operating System, which runs good on client side but need improvement in server architecture. Normally Windows hosting plans have high cost as compared to Linux hosting because of licensing fee.

* If you have developed your website in .net or asp dot net than you have no choice but to go with Windows hosting.

* MS SQL proved stronger and reliable database engine for large databases as compared to MYSQL, but definitely it requires licensing fee for it. If you have large database size than better choose MS SQL and go for Windows hosting.

* If you are not a command line fan and feel comfortable on GUI, than Windows hosting is right choice for you.

On the basis of my personal experience I would recommend Linux web hosting to small business, as it is more economical and secure comparatively.

Good luck!

For Linux web hosting, I would love to recommend shopaserver a cpanel hosting with excellent price and performance in website hosting industry.

There are some people who are quite disappointed that they are unable to make use of Linux web hosting because they have Windows on their PCs. However, the operating system used by an individual on his or her PC is actually not related to the web hosting environment that that individual can use, as the web hosting environment is remotely driven on a web server, which is where the website of the user is uploaded.

Linux and Windows are two operating systems, which are differently directed. Windows is familiar and more common to people and as such, no longer has to be extensively introduced. Linux, the latest version of UNIX operating systems, on the other hand is a bit different. However, both of them are quite similar in offering high quality environments which would be best and most suitable for web hosting. But there are still big differences between the two. Here are some of their aspects to help you decide which kind of server would work best for you.

The first aspect would be the price. When people talk about the Linux system, it is usually referred to an “open source” and so, there are no licensing fees to pay. So compared to Windows, Linux servers could be the more affordable choice. With Windows, only one copy of the operating system could be installed on just one computer. But with Linux, the user could install it on multiple computers.

With regards to dependability, Linux servers are known to very stable and reliable compared to a Windows server. They also offer more “up time” for a certain website.

Also, Linux has relatively more experience in the world of hosting compared to Windows.

For the speed of processing, Linux also wins as a Linux server offers a quicker processing of web pages compared to a Windows server.

For functionality, Windows supports ASP or Active Server Pages that is known as scripting or programming language of Microsoft. It allows the user to have the ability of constructing web pages, which are dynamically database-driven after linking them to a Microsoft database such as Access or SQL Server. Alternatively, Linux does not support these but apply MySQL database instead.

When you are trying to decide what web hosting company to go with you may see that one of the hosting companies is offering Unix web hosting and another is offering Windows web hosting. There will even be times when you can choose one or the other from the same web hosting company. So what are the differences between Unix and Windows and which should you be using?

First of all it is important to note that it does not matter which type of web hosting you decide to go with when creating your site as the actual code used to create your website is essentially the same. The differences between Unix and Windows are actually differences that are more behind closed doors if you will. Here are some major differences between the two:

o    Software: This is the biggest difference between the two. Because Windows is a Microsoft product it will stand to reason that the Windows web hosting will run Microsoft software such as VBScript scripting languages and Microsoft Access databases. Unix on the other hand will not be compatible with these types of software. If your website will require specific Widows or Microsoft applications it will better for you to go with a Windows hosting service.

o    Reliability: While both Unix and Windows web hosting are indeed very reliable, Unix does hold the slight advantage in this category and tends to spend less time ‘down’.

o    Cost: A Unix web host will use any of a number of ‘flavors’ of Unix like Linux or FreeBSD. These operating systems are free and help to keep costs down. Windows on the other hand sees their server software cost thousands of dollars and this can mean more money out of your pocket as well.

o    Bug fixes: Because Unix is run on free servers that mean that anyone has access to the full source code. While that may not sound like a good thing, when it comes to getting a bug fixed it is indeed a good thing as many individuals spend a good deal of time writing new code for Unix to help make it better and fix bugs. Windows though is again owned by Microsoft and because of that only Microsoft people have access to the source code which leads you to rely solely on Microsoft to fix any problems that arise.

So which server operating system is right for you?

Before you make your final decision on whether to go with Unix web hosting or Windows web hosting you first have to figure out what features you will be running on your website. If you are going to use a bunch of Microsoft applications and software then you will of course need to go with a Windows web hosting service. But if your website will not be utilizing those types of programs then going with a Unix web host is going to leave you with more options and more than likely a better price as well. So the correct answer to the questions it, it is all up to you and your website’s needs.
