I was hesitant about purchasing this smart phone because I was never a fan of Blackberry’s (RIMM). I had a BB during their initial boom in the early part of the new millennium. However, the poor browser, poor cell phone network, lackluster screen color, non desirable keyboard, awful battery life, whack OS, & lack of T9 predictive text just couldn’t win me over.

After I realized that I couldn’t text on a touch screen phone, unless it was the iPhone. I decided that I must have a cell phone device with an actual qwerty keyboard, if I expect to survive my text message & email addiction. I picked up the Blackberry 9700 with my corporate discount and walked away with a nice high end phone at a very reasonable price. I have to say that I really enjoy the web browser on the new BB. You can zoom in & out with ease. I thought no browser could compare to the iPod Safari besides the Android G1, but after getting this device – I can safely say that this browser is also one of the best. Its right behind the safari and G1. Prior models were confined to small screens, thirty-five dollar internet only data plans, and no ability to zoom in or out. You were subjected to a small screen and reading small text till your eyes was squinting like grandmas.

Pros: 3G (FINALLY! AT LAST!) New Optical Trackpad (Over the old Trackball) Big vibrant screen 3.5 MM headjack New OS Decent call quality (No issues yet) Excellent new broswer Mini SD up to 16GB (Wish it was 32GB) Use your songs as ringers Wi-Fi Personal Email (Up to 10 accounts can be added) IM Themes Applications (Coming on April 1st) My Favs Full HTML Web Browser (Sometimes) Excellent Multimedia Player (Accepts every format possible) Includes 2 chargers (Wall Charger & USB charger) Includes ear phones and carry case Cons: For long time BB users, this device is really just a cosmetic upgrade with a new OS (Flashier Icons) Micro USB (No more Mini USB) Video & Camera (2.0 Megapixel as oppose to 5.0) Cheap plastic rubber casing Non RIMM Consumer Changes Mind! For anyone who has wanted a BB but held off on getting one and want an entry level Blackberry at a decent price – this is the model to get. Everything about it is an upgrade. The device is basically the BB Bold with a different casing. The battery life could still use some more juice. With excessive email checking & non stop texting, the phone usually needs a charge after a day and a half of usage (Sometimes i can go a charge for 2 days before a charge so thats not bad). I did set the brightness of the phone to the lowest brightness available and it has lasted for a little over 2 days with no charge needed. Even on the lowest brightness, the screen is still very bright, sharp, & crisp. And i still do unlimited texting & web browsing. However, AT&T doesn’t offer the best mobile minute plans on earth & their data plan is probably one of themost expensive around. They are fully aware that their signal is one of the best & in doing so, make up for it by charging their non-friendly services at non-friendly prices, which usually doesn’t offers an abundant amount of minutes, unlimited data, internet, email, text etc will end up costing you a lot! I pay under seventy bucks a month for a decent amount of mins & unlimited everything else. My friend has a similar plan on Verizon, its not unlimited, and her bill is always over a hundred each month.

It does not really matter whether you have selected Linux web server or Windows web server for hosting your website in terms of transferring the files to the servers, since the process of transferring files to the web server is practically same in both of the cases.
However, there are of course significantly different factors influencing each of these server types. This is why many people are simply confused about choosing the particular type of web hosting option for their business needs.
Granted that both the web servers will be dealing the same type of data files, however the difference lies in the way they are dealing these data files. The majority of the web-hosting service providers employ a several versions of UNIX based software.
The most commonly used UNIX based software are FreeBSD and Linux. These are not only free but they do not need any licensing fees as well. This makes the UNIX based web hosting service much cheaper than Windows based web hosting service.
On the other hand, the cost of Windows operating system is much higher, nearly thousands of dollars. This is why web server hosting companies charge much higher fees for Windows based web hosting services, even if they offer both the options to their users.
So, the buyers may experience a significant difference if they compare both of these options, UNIX based web hosting versus Windows based web hosting, based on their price difference. Therefore, if you are more concerned about the fees you are going to pay for your hosting option, UNIX hosting offers the best solution for you.
If your site requires MS Access, VB Script or Active Server Pages support, quite obviously, UNIX hosting solution is not an ideal option for you, since these programs are not compatible with this hosting type. UNIX hosting type is able to offer dynamic content support similar to Windows hosting option by using other software like CGI, PHP, and MySQL.
Additionally, these software options are also available in the Windows based hosting system. Since the cost involved in the Windows based web hosting is high, many hosting companies only offer this option with a Windows based dedicated hosting option.
When you are looking for cheap or free web hosting, you can just be sure of that your site will be hosted on UNIX server.
This is because that UNIX web hosting runs on completely free software, leading to have a budget or free hosting options. One more important concern is there with the UNIX server that it comes with slightly higher reliability compared to the Windows based server. So it can be definitely an important consideration for setting up business.
So considering all these above mentioned aspects, now it is your turn to decide which option is the best option for your business needs and budget. If you are concerned about budget and reliability, UNIX is definitely the best option for you. On the other hand, if you are concerned about running your programs on ASP or VB Script, certainly Windows based option should be your choice.

Vim and EmacsVim and Emacs are not dedicated development tools, but still, they offer a fair number of features for editing HTML and, in fact, any language you may use for web development. They both support syntax highlighting (HTML, PHP, Python, Perl, CSS and many others) and offer support for editing files on remote machines. Both programs are very versatile and can be extensively customized because they support numerous scripts and extensions to extend their functionality. However, both programs are complex tools and present a very steep learning curve.

OOo Writer/Web (OpenOffice.org web)It’s possible to write a simple web page without knowing any HTML at all using the Open Office own web creation tool. This would be a very basic page indeed, because it does not support CSS or forms, for example. I would not recommend using this tool for a complete web site because the code it produces is sometimes unnecessarily complicated so it could present a nightmare in the future to edit and transform a large project which was initially created with Open Office web. But for a quick page, why not ?

SeaMonkey Composer (ex Netscape Composer, ex Mozilla composer)The Open Source SeaMonkey Composer is based on the venerable Netscape composer, so it’s now incorporated into the SeaMonkey suite. It is a fairly simple WYSIWYG editor which generates clean code – unlike many commercial WYSIWYG editors. Unfortunately, it’s not very powerful and it only partially supports CSS. SeaMonkey Composer is a suitable tool for complete web design beginners who want to create a very basic website.

KompozerAvailable on Linux, Mac and Windows, Kompozer is based on the Mozilla composer so it shares a relatively similar interface. However, it is a much more advanced tool now, while trying to maintain a non-scary approach for new-comers in web design. The documentation is good and the community active, so, if you have questions or problems, help is not far away! While SeaMonkey Composer lacks many features in WYSIWYG mode, with Kompozer you can almost create a complete website staying in pure WYSIWYG mode. Still, if you want to add some code manually, it’s possible to jump in a second between WYSIWYG Editing Mode and HTML, using tabs. The preview mode uses the gecko engine (Mozilla, Firefox) to render web pages. While the code is clean, it will still be necessary to test your web pages against less-compliant web browsers, such as Internet Explorer 6, for example. It’s got an easy-to-use, built-in FTP client to quickly upload files to your webspace. Support for forms, tables, and templates is very good but CSS support isn’t perfect and it doesn’t currently support server-side language like PHP. In conclusion, for the moment, Kompozer rests somewhere between tools like Frontpage (Kompozer produces better code) and Dreamweaver (yes, this is huge gap !): it is a good web development tool, aimed at beginners or intermediate users but it will need more refinement and support for server-side language if it wants to approach the very best web editors available on Windows, for example.

Quanta PlusQuanta Plus is a user-friendly HTML editor and web development tool designed primarly for the K Desktop Environment (although it can run on almost any environment). Unlike Bluefish, Quanta is capable of both WYSIWYG designing and handcoding. It supports a huge number of languages, and its syntax checking and highlighting are excellent. It has code folding and current line highlighting. Features also included are: templates, document structure management, project management, plug-in support, DTD support, etc, integrated FTP client and preview function to let you see the results of your work while you’re working. There is also a commercial variant called Quanta Gold, available on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows, with more features. For Gnome users, the KDE interface of Quanta Plus will look a bit out of place, but overall that’s quite minor (note : this is not the case with Quanta Gold, because it’s based on QT). Quanta Plus is free; Quanta Gold costs US $39.95 (download) and $49.95 (cd set).

Screem Screem is an open source web development environment written for use with the GNOME desktop environment (it can also be used on other windows managers, however). Screem supports Dreamweaver templates and offers a number of wizards to help with the addition of multimedia content. It does not provide a WYSIWYG display of pages and it’s more aimed at advanced users.

BluefishBluefish is a powerful and lightweight open-source editor targeted towards programmers and web designers, with many options to write websites, scripts and programming code. Browser integration is good and it’s got very good support for HTML, CSS, XML, PHP, Pearl, C, JavaScript and even … Pascal or Octave/MATLAB ! As the developers say on their web page, it’s “a what you see is what you need” interface, so it’s not a tool suitable for complete beginners in web design (and it was never meant to be !) and there is no graphical preview (but you can quickly access/launch external browsers by clicking on the relevant icon). One important feature missing is FTP integration. Otherwise, it is by far my favorite editor !AmayaAmaya is the W3C’s -the international consortium which helps develop standards for the World Wide Web – browser and web editor. Although it’s theoretically a WYSIWYG package, the interface is rather confusing and not very well designed. Finally, this program can be relatively unstable.DreamweaverThere is no native version of Dreamweaver on Linux, on which it is officially not supported. However, Dreamweaver MX and Dreamweaver 8 run well using Wine or Cross-over office. Dreamweaver is the now ultra-dominant web design package available on Windows and Mac OS : it’s often excellent and very expensive.

Firewalls are necessary for computers if we connect to internet. There are different kinds of methods how the firewalls work and check the incoming information. At the same time the firewalls let the outgoing ports open. It gives security for our computer and protects it from the system mistakes as well. For personal computers it can be enough and useful but for networks maybe not.

Linux uses iptables filter to give stronger protection and security. It’s a software in basic Linux packages. We can exactly determine that how we would like to check the incoming traffic with this program. We can define the criteria for each port, services and we can define our own strict rules for our incoming traffic.

For network level’s security there are several distributions for firewalls. IPCop is one of them. It’s only for security. We need a computer on which IPCop is running and there are some basic activities like framework, connection to network and routing. Linux distributions like SUSE or Fedora use to have graphical desktop, text editor and more software but on IPCop there are only these basic activities and the previously mentioned very important iptables. It’s our firewall between our network and the internet so we don’t work on it.

It needs a more complicated setup but it’s worth because it gives strong protection for our network.

For complete instruction on using gOS Rocket please visit:BeginLinux.com

The original gPC was released in early November 2007, and it brought us the innovative gOS Operating system. gOS is based on Ubuntu + Enlightenment and offers Google integration with many of the desktop applications. Direct access to Youtube, Google Docs, Meebo, Blogger, and more comes from a collection of icons residing on the Ibar at the bottom of the gOS desktop. Another feature that is unique to gOS is the shelf storage a functional organization system.

When the $199 gPCs hit the Walmart shelves, they didn’t stay there long. High demand same can be said for online environment where ordering methods still seem to be exhausted from the surprising demand for this inexpensive but functional desktop unit. The Everex TC2502 Green gPC comes with 1.5 GHz Via Technologies C7-D processor, pre-installed office software from OpenOffice.org, DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, 512 MB of DDR2 system memory, 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, and a 80 GB hard drive.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Everex announces the CloudBook Ultra-Mobile PC. The Cloud is 9 inches long, weighs in at 2 pounds, boasts a 1.2GHz VIA C7-M ULV mobile processor and it provides your with five hours of use with a single battery charge due to the the 4-cell, lithium-ion battery. Also the Cloud sports a 7 inch wide screen LCD and the pre-installed and linked software includes Mozilla FireFox, gMail, Meebo, Skype, Google Documents & Spreadsheets, Google Calendar, Google News, Google Maps, Wikipedia, Google Product Search, GIMP, Blogger, YouTube, Xine Movie Player, RhythmBox, Faqly, Facebook and OpenOffice.org 2.3 which includes Writer, Calc, Draw, and Impress for all of your office needs.

Due to the lack of a gOS compatible webcam, gOS and meebooth partnered with Ezonics, a leader in web cam developement, and created the gCam. It looks as if more accessories are to come for the Cloud too. Ezonics CEO Liu Ping commented “We are excited to work with gOS to launch the gCam as a first of many Linux friendly, cloud devices.”

One major enhancement of the Everex Cloud over it’s predecessor is the new Rocket 2.0 gOS operating system. The existing gOS 1.0 desktop has been enhanced adding features like gbooth, a web browser-based application that makes capturing photos and movies a snap. Other improvements include pre-installed Flash plugin for online movie viewing, improved reliability for Exalt Wi-Fi manager, virtual desktops for easy grouping of applications across multiple desktop spaces, and easy online storage, backup, and file sharing at box.net.

Other small, inexpensive, Linux powered PCs are popping up everywhere after the Asus Eee PC sold 40,000 copies right out of the gate and the original gPC still show sold out almost everywhere. At ZaReason.com they sold out of their pre-order alotment of the Cloudbook right away. Besides the positive response from consumers the future of Everex and others looks even brighter when taking into consideration their future plans. Everex plans on releasing a developer version 60 days after the initial cloud release which will include a touch screen, also 9 inch versions are on the way soon and possibly a wide selection of light skins.

Looking for best affordable Linux web hosting plans? First take a look at some important features which must be considered when choosing your web hosting company:

Reliability and uptime: Hosting uptime refers to the percentage of time the host is accessible via the internet. It is very important your service be uptime (functioning and available for use). It means you can access your account whenever you want to update your web pages, and users can enter your website whenever they refer to your site address. If your hosting service is not uptime it can be catastrophic!

Disk space: Web hosting space is the amount of room that the web host provides to store your HTML, graphic, video/audio and other files. This figure is most commonly stated in gigabytes. If you don’t know how much space you need for your website, you can choose a web host with unlimited disk space, which allows you to build as many web pages as you want.

Bandwidth: Bandwidth (or data transfer) refers to the amount of data that is accessed by your visitors. Web hosts define bandwidth as the total amount of data access from your server over a month’s time. This figure is most commonly expressed in gigabytes. If you don’t know how much bandwidth you need for your website, you can pick a web host with unlimited data transfer, which allows you to support as many visitors as you want.

Ease of Control Panel: It is important that the control panel is easy to use and all information can be accessed easily.

If you are a beginner it is generally hard to you to pick the right web hosting service. There are many websites which display a couple of web hosting companies as the best and leave people confused without being helpful. To make things even more confusing, some hosting companies are cheating and lying to their customers!

Vocally, Apes and Androids seem very lethargic. They are a more inventive and equally addictive MGMT. A less insane, and more comprehensible, version of Mindless Self Indulgence. In parts the vocals go a bit “Scissor Sisters” too, with maybe a small hint of Marilyn Manson? There are many, many other comparisons that could be made, but I’ll leave those for now and let you see what you think. I won’t bombard you with prejudicial remarks.

To put them in a descriptive box, they are easy-going classic-rock with special

appearances from electronic dance. Very MGMT, but with a bit more flair. Judging from Nights of the Week they are highly original in their song-writing: they don’t stick to the general formula that most artists do which makes for a very fresh listen.

Nights of the Week starts with jangly guitaring – reminiscent of old ‘driving’ music – followed by

those relaxing, lethargic vocals mentioned earlier. Slowly but surely more instruments appear. The band have been incredibly inventive in putting this song together: it’s not in the typical “verse, chorus, verse, chorus” format by any means. It’s a concoction of various ‘limbs’ forming the body of the song. Each limb is different but with some specific markers which identify it as a recognisable and nameable thing.

First-off is the chorus limb, or the ‘anti-chorus’ so it seems. The drums drop out and leave a simple guitar riff and a small few words by the vocals. A tambourine joins in too, along with the synthesiser to keep the beat. From then on it’s just the words “These are the nights of the week where you force yourself out of bed” which act as a flag for the chorus limbs.

The ‘build-up’ limb appears around the middle of the song, and contains very synthesised voices repeating the words “The nights of the week, the nights of the week” with a slight drumroll to keep the tension rising.

As for the other possible limbs, there are a million different names I could give them, but I think it’s best to leave it unsaid. The song is a fantastic mix of mixes. Towards the end of the song the vocals seem to become more defined: it’s possible to hear one voice that’s not been drowned in ‘synthesisation’.

The parts which will become the most recognised and widely repeated by listeners will be the sections with the vocals humming or “ow”ing along to the core riff. This little beauty has already wormed its way into my own vocal chords. With managers in multiple countries and press contacts crawling all over them, Apes & Androids are not doing too badly.  If I could make music that sounds that fun for a living I’d do it in a heartbeat. They are set to be one of this year’s success stories.

I hope my limb analogy didn’t fall on its arse.

Operating systems are the big thing in 2009, with many battling for the top spot. Let’s take a look at three of the best: Android, Windows Mobile and the new boy, WebOS.

HTC Hero

The HTC Hero is comparable to the iPhone, sharing a similar keyboard-less design. Again, it’s with the software that the HTC Hero shines, with Android living up to the title some have given it, that of ‘game changer’. Its completely open source nature makes adapting the OS very easy, and the interface itself is once again a finger-friendly, sleek, and polished affair, with gesture controls the order of the day. The tight integration of the full Google suite (including Apps and Gmail), makes it a real force to be reckoned with, and it has to be said that the HTC Hero is a truly stunning phone.

Toshiba TG01

Next up is a phone that really gives Windows Mobile the grunt it needs to run properly: the Toshiba TG01. In terms of outstanding new technologies, what the Toshiba TG01 brings to the party isn’t the 4.1 inch display (although that’s noteworthy in itself), but what’s inside it. The Toshiba TG01 uses a next-gen, dual-core Snapdragon processor, which runs at 1GHz, and that means the Toshiba TG01 is the most powerful phone in existence… which is good, because in terms of other features, a lot of other phones leave the Toshiba TG01 in the dust…

Palm Pre

So, the HTC Hero is the open source contender. And the Toshiba TG01 is the only one with a super-fast 1GHz processor. What does the Palm Pre offer that’s different? Well, one could talk about the WebOS interface it uses, as it’s unique in the annals of phone history. And indeed, there’s one feature of WebOS, directly related to the keyboard, that makes the Palm Pre so cool. Universal search. Now, many phones do that, but the Palm Pre does it so much more cleverly. Just start typing what you want to know about, from the front screen, and the Palm Pre will search your contacts, apps, music, pictures, and even the internet, to interpret and find what you’re looking for. That really is a cool feature, and it may well make the Palm Pre the coolest QWERTY phone out there.

If a store opened across the street from Target, same relative inventory, same service, only difference everything was free, would Target survive?
Unlikely.
Yet in software…
“Payware” = “Freeware” (open source)
————————————–
Windows = Linux
Oracle = MySQL
MS Office = OpenOffice
Ultra Edit = PSPad
…the current reality is that payware and freeware compete in the marketplace head to head.
In fact, the “for pay” software continues to thrive in the marketplace despite free software that is in many cases just as good (some might claim better).
Why is this?
When you buy a pair of jeans at the store the total cost is paid in full at the time of the purchase. There are no additional costs involved that directly pertain to the manufacturer. Of course there is the on-going cost of maintaining the pants through washing. This is a totally different market that is wholly agnostic to the brand of jeans. In other words, Tide washes Wrangler’s the same as Levi’s.
With software the game is different. Only a small percentage of the total cost of software can be attributed to its development. Support and maintenance make up a sizeable chunk of the cost. The larger one scales the software the higher these costs go. There is no singular solution like Tide to deal with both Windows or Linux. Sure you copy files in both, and make directories, but the means of doing so is very different and not interchangeable like your detergent. My trivial example has not even exposed the tip of the iceberg!
So this leaves us with the issue of market share. When you have a commodity that requires so much additional and continuing service/support, market share becomes a very important factor.
Support and service for free software is anything but free. Microsoft loves to tell us (and rightly so) that TCO (total cost of ownership) between Windows and Linux is in the same ballpark. They even claim that Linux costs more, all factors considered. But the geeks at Redmond can’t have it both ways. Open Source software that can be obtained for free does not represent communism (Remember Mr. Balmer declaring this?). Communism to my understanding was never a sustaining and growing multi-billion dollar business.
If we look back as to how Microsoft dominated the market we tend to forget some key points.
* The mainframe market viewed Microsoft as a passing fad.
[The CEO of DEC wondered why in the world anyone would every want to own a computer.]
*Microsoft was the only real game in town when it came to PC operating systems.
[Any attempts by others (DR Dos, OS2) were summarily squashed.]
*Microsoft gave away IE in order to squash then leader Netscape.
[Who?]
*Microsoft sold early versions of Office for $99.00 to gain market share.
[Other players at the time were selling there office suites for 3+ times that amount. Microsoft bought market share by thinking long term. After all, changing your word processor and spreadsheet are a bit dicier than changing your undies. Also, think of all of us who make a living off these products.]
While many software vendors have come and gone, it is the open source, “here it is for free” Cowboys and Cowgirls that are here to stay and threaten the very world of “for pay” software. But what the hey, we developers are typically more enthralled by creating things than making money. I know of no other profession on the planet where not taking and reusing other peoples work is considered the sane way of doing ones job. I believe in journalism they call it plagiarism?

The HTC T-Mobile G1 is a dinky little phone. Despite the ugly (for some) little lip on the front, and its weight, this is a compact, sturdy little social assistant that is sure to please the person who spends a lot of time surfing the web as part of their social scene.
It’s pretty – it’s white, and has a really handy sliding screen which provides access to the full five-row landscape orientated QWERTY keyboard.
The T-Mobile G1 weighs in at a pretty heavy 158 grams, unlike its bigger Android brother – the HTC Magic, which only weighs 118.5g. For those who prefer a keyboard to the touch screen function, this is the phone to choose when you need to surf the web, and wish to be able to take videos of your social life and immediately upload them to YouTube.
It measures a touch under 118mm long, and at nearly 56mm wide and only 17mm deep HTC and Google have packed an awful lot of power, web-loading speed and functionality into a tiny little package.
The T-Mobile runs off a Qualcomm MSM7201A 528 MHz processor. With a ROM of 256 MB and a RAM of 192MB, it has enough oomph to seamlessly work with the Android operating system to give you unequalled surfing and web search capability. The memory can be expanded by the use of SD 2.0 compatible microSD memory card.
This is a quad band phone, and is designed to work on HSPA/WCDMA in Europe (2100 MHz), US (1700/2100 MHz) and give up to 7.2 Mbps down link (HSDPA) and 2 Mbps up-link (HSUPA) speeds. On Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, workable frequencies are 850, 900, 1800 and 1900MHz. The final accessibility and band frequency is ultimately dependant on the network service provider.
From the point of view of connectivity – the HTC T-Mobile G1 has Bluetooth 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rate, and also uses Wi-Fi and an HTC ExtUSB. This is the 11-pin mini-USB and audio jack in one and replaces the standard 3.5mm audio jack.
The camera could be improved – at 3.2 megapixels with auto focus it ranks below other phones with good connectivity on the market.
For the person that enjoys listening to music on their mobile phone, the HTC T-Mobile G1 offers a built in speaker as well as Bluetooth headphone connection. It plays 40 polyphonic and standard MIDI format 0 and 1 (SMF)/SP MIDI.
Finding your way to the club you have just searched for on the web need not be a problem – this compact handset sports GPS capability with Google Maps.
The HTC T-Mobile G1 has a Rechargeable Lithium-ion battery which, when fully charged, will last 350 and 406 minutes of talk time, depending on whether you are using WCDMA or GSM, and on standby, from fully charged, it will last between 319 and 402 hours – also dependent on whether you are using WCDMA or GSM.
The T-Mobile’s special features are a Motion Sensor and Digital Compass.
All in all – this is a nice compact, user friendly little phone – with tremendous accessibility to the World Wide Web, and seamless up- and down-loading from video sites such as YouTube. For the socially orientated person who wants assistance capability – HTC T-Mobile G1 is a good choice.
