With Windows Mobile installed and running on millions of handsets across the globe, is it really any surprise that Microsoft could be considering releasing its own handset? Although just in the rumour phase – and hardly fuelled by Microsoft’s frequent assertions that it wasn’t going to get into the hardware market – the current talk in the mobile world is all about Microsoft possibly creating its very own mobile phone. Eager to compete against Google’s rival operating system Android which, over time, could end up a very clear contender to Windows Mobile’s popularity, it could be the case that the software giant is thinking about trying out making a mobile for itself. A Microsoft branded mobile could appeal to many, though it’s still a risky market to enter for a newcomer. With companies like Apple, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson battling it out for the prize of mobile king, the uninitiated need not apply – meaning a Microsoft offering could easily find itself embroiled in a struggle with which it can’t cope. That said, some websites have been reporting that possible confirmation of a Microsoft phone have been flying around, including some sites claiming to have pictures of the phone – which is currently rumoured to be based on Microsoft’s MP3 player, the Zune. If true, the appearance of a Zune phone would be a very clear throwing of the gauntlet at Apple, whose iPod and mobile phone combo, the iPhone, is one of the most gushed about smartphones around. Could Microsoft be taking a tip from its biggest software rival and creating its own offering? If so, it has its work cut out for it if it wants to skewer some of Apple’s fanbase and carve out a market niche for its own. However, when Google stepped into the mobile market and revealed a device toting its own Android operating system, it was happily received – and has, like with Microsoft – sparked rumours that it may not be long before we find a company branded ‘Googlephone’ hitting the market. This could mean that Microsoft might expect a similar reception – though it might want to work on its image first in order to get to Google’s level of customer respect. In any case, if a Microsoft phone does come out, one thing will make it a clear winner – the deals it’s available on. If it was released with cheap calls, cheap texts and a plethora of other great moneysavers, it can hardly go wrong.
